Fascinating... I guess the XXIst century Jakarta is like the 1920's New York
Fascinating history of the lobbying campaign that took streets away from pedestrians and gave them to motorists.
In the 1920s, auto groups redefined who owned the city street.

I don't think I'm going to comment on this one. For those who don't live in Indonesia, MUI stands for Majelis Ulama INDONESIA and is the country's top Muslim clerical body.
But Merry Christmas to all!

Hmmm.... Interesting point. I'm still in favour of offing the drug traffickers though, as a signal that Indonesia wants to clean its act. These executions may lack moral rightitude as so eloquently argued by the author, but they are legal, contrary to the extra judicial killings committed under President Soharto. And that too, at the time, sent a song message.
What the author fails to point out is that drug trafficking is part of a larger criminal web, one that endangers more than the life of addicts.
And yes, those caught were probably very low on the crime syndicates ladder rungs, but their deaths will be a deterrent to others.
If President Jokowi really does care about saving lives, and if they really do believe that this can be achieved by executing the “kingpins” who trade in dangerous substances, then why not execute tobacco barons along with drug traffickers?

What is happening here is very clear: PDI-P cadres, at the request of Ibu Mega are reporting KPK commissioners in order to stop the investigation on Budi Gunawan, after Jokowi was forced to accept him as a nominee in spite of the President public stand on corruption.
This is political business as usual in Indonesia where the weight of patronage effectively trumps protestations of democracy.
Doing so demonstrates that Ibu Megawati doesn't respect law and democracy any more that Prabowo, but at least, he admits it openly... Once again, it is a pity that being someone's daughter is the only prerequisite to power, and the open door to meddle negatively in Indonesia future...
And do you know the very worst? Ibu Mega (one could wonder whether this stands for megalomaniac) has already arranged for her own daughter to follow on her dreadful legacy.

Everything you want is just on the other side of Fear.
My criminal record is blank.

My courage is intact.

I'm not a wretched of the earth, but neither am I a slave driver or a profiteer. I belong without shame but without excessive pride either, to this middle class that is targeted for extinction in any society that aims to level down.

I hold that race, creed and nationality, though significant, are finally irrelevant as they always fail to define anyone. But people want to reduce others to labels, to tick the check-boxes and believe they know them: "where are you from?" they ask...
I for one, have if not nurtured, at least welcome in my life many contradictions that resulted in an individual that can't easily be categorized.

So for what it's worth here it goes:
  • Born and bred in France, I have spent most of my adult life "abroad". So I can say without the shadow of a doubt that grass is always greener wherever you water it.
  • Raised a Catholic, I am now a determined humanist, married to a Muslim lady, also a humanist.
  • Educated as a mechanical engineer, I chose Sales as my first job.
  • Having acquired an MBA, I evolved to makeup artistry.
  • Fifty-plus years old, I have lived one and a half family life (the "half" being going on)
  • I have four beautiful daughters ranging from 24, 22 and 20 to a fizzy 8 years-old.
  • I am an entrepreneur and a liberal.
  • I want the social well-being of my fellow Man but believe in self-improvement more than assistance.
  • I exercise to become older, not younger.
I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, where I am gradually building a socially responsible group of companies with the help of many talented individuals and a few loved ones.

This is Italian food done right! Excellent choice of dishes, great pizza, God selection of wines and beverages, only the coffee is poor... Doesn't justify knocking a star off this rating. I've come here a number of times and never been disappointed!

No hesitation whatsoever in giving five stars to Hendrik for what he accomplishes there! He is, so far, the very best barrista-owner-coffee fanatic in Jakarta. Coffee is fresh, roasted to perfection and pulled by a master... Fabulous !

A great find (thank you Google for the suggestion on maps). A small-ish pizzeria that does really good pizzas, though the crust is a bit too thin and crispy in my opinion. Friendly staff and low key surroundings make it a much better choice that Lombardi's (also nearby).

This is a review I had to cut and paste. For some reason the name chosen for my original review turned into Plaza Indonesia only. So this review actually dates back from early 2012... A good concept, but way too expensive for the kind of food served. Edit August 2012 The quality of the food improved tremendously. Still overpriced, but now worth a visit every now and then.

A true New York experience. Good (as in comfort) food in oversized portions served by an off-handed staff that has no time for tourists. Don't bother trying to make sense of the mayhem, jump in, shout your order, pay, eat (if you're lucky enough to get a seat) and get out. But I say again, the food is good... Oh ! but *skip* the "espresso" ...

A good place in Makassar, with its own parking area, sitting outside in shaded areas or inside. Don't be fooled by the name, it has much more on the menu than cakes and ice cream. Traditional Indonesian food.
