What a great article Nicole, thank you! I am glad you brought this subject up. I used to be involved with an organization that called themselves "certified tea masters". While we openly told our students we did not believe anyone who took a course on tea could then call themselves a tea master, they used this term in the marketing, etc. Shana and I felt their curriculum was weak at best and is considered one of the better ones out there. How could anyone call themselves a tea master when they have not even been to a tea plantation? It sounds preposterous to me.I always told my students that the people I considered tea masters were people who I met who were raised their entire life in the world of tea since a young age. I have met these kinds of people in China and documented them in my book Wild Tea Hunter.  When we opened the International Tea Academy we decided not to offer the title Tea Master because we felt it was deceptive. We looked around at every tea educational company out there and we did not find one single one we felt was complete in what they were offering. Within China there are many tea schools, but you have to be approved by the Chinese government to provide any type of certification on a governmental level or university level. This can certainly steer people's curriculum design, what you can and cannot say in your training so as not to offend anyone or worse, get shut down. While we are not a university we felt we could offer a training that would fit the tea professional to understand not only standard international tea evaluation, but hands-on tea production and understanding the inner workings of the tea industry. We so far have not found a single other school offering this kind of well-rounded education.
We have a particular specialty and focus on Chinese teas because that is our specialty of knowledge. I lived in different provinces in China to study that area's tea and tea production for sometimes months. I found that true tea knowledge cannot be found just in a book or on a youtube video, although it is a good start. Hands on, direct experience and working with people who have a deep understanding of tea speaks volumes more.
