This is the story of Leo Lech, a man whose property was destroyed in pursuit of a petty shoplifter. And his civil suit might shape the way the courts view the 5th Amendment. My latest piece for +Reason.

The online world of politics can be toxic, but it doesn't have to be.

Today, I officially filed to run for City Council for City of Delta as an At-Large Representative.

Almost a year ago, I made the conscious decision to become more active in my community. I joined the board of the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce. I was elected Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Delta County. I was appointed to the City's Planning Commission. I attended as many City Council meetings and work sessions as possible. I constantly met with local leaders to chat about and problem solve the issues impacting our community.

Now, I'm making the next logical step: seeking public office. If I want to see things fixed, then I have to lead the way.

There is a lot to love about Delta, but there is always room for improvement -- and what needs to be improved is how local government functions. We need to stop brokering our future with bad debt and expensive boondoggles. We need to address why our city has a bad reputation when it comes to starting a business. And we need to stop paying lip service to "free markets," while talking out the other side of our mouths about what businesses should be "allowed" to operate in city limits.

If you are interested in learning more about the reforms that I intend to pursue as a City Councilman, please visit www.votestooks.org.

There is a lot of work to do, but Delta is worth the fight.

You're probably misusing the word "liberal" when discussing modern politics.

For many kids, college is the right path, and it may be for my kid. If so, he’ll have my full support. However, it also might not be the right path, in which case he’ll learn an important lifelong lesson of remaining flexible, keeping all options open, and investing his money wisely.

My latest for +Fatherly.

So you've befriended a libertarian, and you can't tell why he is so argumentative. Here are a few tips to help you survive this friendship.

I enjoyed my time in college admissions. I made some incredible friends all across the country. I got see young people at their best on a daily basis. I worked on a pristine and beautiful campus.

But I also struggled with how we as a country manage higher education, especially on the financial side. My latest for +Foundation for Economic Education.
