What do you think?
Rude, critical, argumentative – we all know people like this. (In fact, some of us ARE people like this at times.) We have to work with them, live next door to them or just interact with them regularly. So how do we deal with them?
When our coworker wants to criticize our boss’ every move or our neighbor wants to continue his ongoing tirade about the county’s watering restrictions, we can choose not to engage. We can be polite and acknowledge them, but we don’t have to add to the rant. Just like water being thrown on a fire, our lack of response will often take the wind right out of their sails.
The reality is that confrontational, angry people are (unfortunately) often a part of our daily lives, and we can’t always get rid of them (as much as we’d like to). The key to having more peace is knowing how to deal with them. And Charlie Brown’s got it right – don’t respond. When we don’t add fuel to the fire, we prevent ourselves from taking on their emotion.
So if you’re looking for more peace in your life, follow my example. The next time my brother-in-law starts in on his soapbox of criticism, I’m going to ask him how his golf game is. And then I’m going to sit back and enjoy the quiet. If that doesn't work, plan B is I'm going to walk away.
