An X-ray and CT scan of a man's chest showed that his heart had turned 90 degrees to the right after a motorcycle accident

At first, it may seem logical to think that the man's heart had rotated because of his body getting violently twisted during the accident, but in fact, the heart rotation probably happened in the minutes, or even an hour, after the accident, Fontana said.

The doctors found that injuries to the man's lungs at the time of the accident caused air to leak from the lungs and build up in the space in the chest, they wrote in the report.

Why Don't Naked Mole Rats get Cancer?

Naked mole rats are the most fascinating of creatures. There are many reasons I say this, but today I want to focus on one particular feature about them that is just an amazing example of how weird and wonderful they are. Naked mole rats are extremely resistant to cancer - tumors have never been observed in them. How on earth do they manage this?

✤ Before I explain the exact mechanism, we need to go over some basics. A tumor is an aggregation of cells. Cells generally don't like to be too close to each other - in the lab, if a petri-dish has too many cells on it, the overcrowding makes them stop growing. We call this contact inhibition. The cells sense that they are too close to each other and secrete signaling molecules into their surroundings known as anti-growth factors. These molecules signal the cells to stop dividing. I explained this pathway in detail here: http://goo.gl/BsRgR5. Cancer happens when this mechanism fails.

✤ If cancer happens when contact inhibition fails, then it logically follows that enhanced contact inhibition should mean even more cancer resistance. Bingo - that is exactly what happens with naked mole rat cells. These cells are hypersensitive to contact inhibition, which is what makes them so resistant to cancer.

✤ Our cells also have a mechanism for contact inhibition, and yet we are unfortunately more than capable of developing cancer. This raises the question, what is so special about naked mole rat cells that makes them so hypersensitive to contact inhibition?

✤ It turns out that naked mole rat cells have an additional mechanism to make them hypersensitive to contact inhibition. Our cells rely on a protein known as p27 to halt cell division by putting the brakes on the cell cycle. Naked mole rat cells, on the other hand, use p27 for regular contact inhibition just like we do and another protein known as p16 for early contact inhibition. The naked mole rat cells have the same genes we do (we both have p27 and p16) but their functions are distinct; for naked mole rats, p16 functions as the 'early brake' while p27 functions as the 'backup brake'. There are other differences between our cells and naked mole rat cells, but this is the primary mechanism by which they evade cancer.

I find this work fascinating, not just because it features the awesome naked mole rat, but because it explains the molecular mechanism of why naked mole rats don't get cancer. It also shows how the same genes are capable of vastly different functions in different species; although the naked mole rat's anticancer defense strategy evolved separately to us, our cells carry the same tools.

Men really DO have bigger #brains.

Many have long suspected that the male and female brains are very different. Now, researchers at Cambridge University have revealed just what those differences are. By studying over 20 years of neuroscience research, they were able to create a map showing just how the sexes differ.

The research, published this week in the prestigious journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, took in 218 different studies. It found that males on average have larger total brain volumes than women, by 8-13%. On average, males also had larger absolute volumes than females in the intracranial space (12%; >14,000 brains), total brain (11%; 2,523 brains), cerebrum (10%; 1,851 brains), grey matter (9%; 7,934 brains), white matter (13%; 7,515 brains), regions filled with cerebrospinal fluid (11.5%; 4,484 brains), and cerebellum (9%; 1,842 brains).

Looking more closely, researchers found the differences in volume between the sexes were located in several regions. These included parts of the limbic system, which deals with emotion, and the language system.

Cure for #deafness comes closer to reality.

For years, it had been known that the hair-like sensory cells were regenerated in birds and fish, but not in mammals. A year ago, a group of researchers at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary discovered that an experimental drug could regenerate hair cells in the inner ear that sense sound and restore rudimentary hearing when administered to deaf mice.

On Thursday in the journal Stem Cell Reports, the team reported new insights into precisely which cells are becoming the new hair cells.

Death Star Engineer Addresses the Exhaust Port ‘Issue’

This is a pretty hilarious read. The engineer responsible for the design of the Death Star finally addresses that whole exhaust port issue and why he put the port there in the first place. He even addresses the design of the Death Star II and how the same mistake won’t be made again.

First Leadless Pacemaker successfully Implanted into a patient's heart

During the American Heart Month, Vivek Reddy, MD, of Mount Sinai Heart at The Mount Sinai Hospital implanted the United States' first miniature-sized, leadless cardiac pacemaker directly inside a patient's heart without surgery.

The leads-free pacemaker is implanted by a cardiac electrophysiologist directly inside the heart during a catheter-guided procedure through the groin via the femoral artery. The device, resembling a small, metal silver tube, is only a few centimeters in length, making it less than ten percent the size of a traditional pacemaker.

The Nanostim device, made by St. Jude Medical, is being tested for safety and efficacy in an international, multicenter clinical trial called LEADLESS II, which is planning to enroll 670 patients at 50 centers across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
