10 Disciplines of a Godly Man

Jesus was a man of discipline — He did what was right and what was best even if it wasn’t popular, desired, or fun. He made time every morning to communicate with the Father. He gave to God what was God’s. He saw the best in people even when they couldn’t see it themselves. He was a man of discipline.

Men who model their lives after Christ, and make every effort to live in tune with scripture, implement these ten disciplines into their lives.

On Church Buildings, the Homeless, and Being Like Jesus

Your church’s building does not exist for your church. It isn’t there to help you carry out the vision of your church’s ministry. It wasn’t given just to keep your church body comfortable on Sunday, nor provide an inviting place for those seeking Christ.

The building does not belong to the local church and its vision. It belongs to Christ and His mission.

Most times, the two are intertwined. Seeing the lost begin to find healing and hope in Christ is God’s mission.

But there are other times when the two are far removed from one another. When the homeless are shunned at our doors. When the broken feel they aren’t welcomed on our property. When the church is too absorbed with its own mission, ministry, and goals to be of real need to a dying and broken world.

It’s in those times, we forget who truly owns our buildings — and why they were given.

How is your church using God’s building to bring real transformation to the poor, broken, and homeless? Leave a comment below.

The Bible is not an operator's manual nor is it basic instructions before leaving earth.

The #Bible is a mix of books and letters and historical accounts and songs and poetry that all tell the story of a God who is crazy enamored with His ultimate creation.

You.

Everything that Hinders

The enemy knows the right distractions to place in our lives to keep up from chasing after God.

Not sin.
Not life-destroying decisions.

Distractions.

That is how most of us stop pursuing God and the call He has placed on our lives.

We get too busy with our favorite TV shows to read the Bible.
Volunteer our time and are too busy to pray.
Try to level up in the latest mobile game to build real community.
Complain about our work, family, finances and never start pursuing our call.

Paul tells us whatever the hindrance, we need to throw it off.

Response to Faith

We want the glorious story of faith, but few are willing to do the work of becoming more like Christ.

It’s exciting to think what God can do through your life. The adventures He might take you on. The lives He’ll impact through you. The stories of His faithfulness you’ll get to share.

It’s not so fun dealing with the sins, habits, attitudes, and desires that hinder you from running after God and His call on your life.

The God of More

Anything you trust more than God to bring happiness or fulfillment will eventually leave you empty.

It’s how the god of More works. He lures you in with lies that the next best thing will finally make you happy, fulfilled, and secure.

But it never does.

You reach that next level, finally get your next best thing – and feel just as empty as before.

Because more can’t fulfill you.
Only God can.

Arrested Heart

After one night in Poland, I didn’t want to leave.

The trip back to England wasn’t as glamorous as I anticipated, and all I wanted to do was return to Poland and Czech.

And I have.
Every year.
For nine years.

When God arrests your heart for an area, a people group, or a country, it changes your life. Tweet this

You do crazy things like give up taking a vacation for 14 years just so you can go back.
You arrange yearly mission trips to take others with you.
You give your time and energy and resources to be a part of what God is doing.
You learn the language, crave the food, and count down the days until you can go back again.

That is what happened to me.

And, if you’re willing, it can happen to you, too.

Trying to Find Life Among the Dead

Don’t fall into the belief that life can be found among the dead — that hope and peace and joy and fulfillment and worth and meaning and belonging will be discovered the tomb of possessions, wealth, success, and dream relationships.

Life is only found in one place.
And He is no longer in the tomb.

The Incubator of Great Faith

Every great story of faith finds its root in an overwhelmingly difficult circumstance.

These aren’t the kind of situations that are desired. They aren’t welcomed with open arms. None of these great men and women of faith asked to be put in these life or death, overwhelming, incredibly stretching circumstances.

Yet, it was in that exact context that faith worthy of finding itself in the hall-of-faith chapter in the Bible is forged.

Overwhelmingly difficult circumstances are often the incubators for world-changing faith. Tweet this

If we allow it.

Skillfully Surrounded

Sin skillfully surrounds us.

It has a single mission — to surround you so skillfully that you stop running after God and His call on your life.

The enemy knows exactly the temptation and sin to place in front of you. He knows the temptations you are bent toward taking, and the temptations that don’t entice you at all.

And he’ll do everything he can to place the right temptations in your life at the right time — until you are skillfully surrounded and can’t run anymore.

Paul tells us what we are to do with that sin.

Throw it off.

Die to. Live for.

Originally, Lent was the time of preparation for those who were to be baptized, a time of concentrated study and prayer before their baptism at the Easter Vigil, the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord early on Easter Sunday. But since these new members were to be received into a living community of Faith, the entire community was called to preparation.

It was a season of preparation.
A time of growth.
And it was marked by fasting and soul searching.

Lent wasn’t just about giving something up.
It was about preparing for something better.

Lent is about dying to our selves, and living to something better.

Substantial Faith

Faith is more than just thoughts, more than just beliefs you follow.

Faith is substance.

It has an actual existence, becomes a real being, and is the foundation of everything else in one’s life.
You can touch it, feel it, and see it.
Faith moves out of the mind and heart and into reality.

Faith is trusting the promises of God to the point that what you hope for becomes real.
