One of the arguments Linux users like to give to potential converts (Windows/Mac users) is that updating a Linux system requires hardly any restarts, the cases where a restart is needed is after installing hardware drivers or updating the kernel. With the new patch end users and sysadmins will now be able to keep their systems running for months on end without having to restart to update their kernels on their systems.

I used to update hardware drivers by hand to so you normally don't need a reboot then either unless things have changed drastically. Two unavoidable times I can remember was updating kernel or glibc.

Good info about the patches though. We'll see if Ubuntu starts using them that way.

Does anyone know why things like the panel stop responding if I lose my connection to my NFS server?

I see this as I have folder widgets on my desktop that point to an NFS location. I keep links to documents or application launchers that are needed on multiple systems there so one update fixes all my systems when something needs tweaked.

I looked at soft mounts and while they would be fine for the app launchers I do not want the possibility of data loss I'd face when writing to the NFS share with them.

Thank you all for the feedback on our recent microcontroller video.

Statements made in the original video were not explained properly, and therefore misunderstood. We have since pulled the video so we could help clarify things.

Microcontrollers can run with and/or without GPL software, and is not a benefit of Microcontrollers. It is therefore important to understand the license implications of the unique software that you may be using. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License for more general information.

ARM is a strong supporter of open source and contributes to many projects. Thank you for being such strong supporters, and sorry for any confusion.
