I've been fascinated by samizdat (the original literary versions) for years and I'm glad to see the spirit is still thriving in Russia.

I have mixed feelings on remote working so will be following this story to see what the results are and if it is deemed a success. There are obvious benefits for companies, and especially employees, but I've never worked on a project that hasn't turned out better for having routine face-to-face collaboration.

I just across your page here but can't resist commenting on the Yahoo story. For me the operative line in your take mirrors my experience when it comes to some types of projects: "I've never worked on a project that hasn't turned out better for having routine face-to-face collaboration."

This is my view despite being highly flexible as to time, location, circumstances - as to where work can be done. I have stood in freezing cold outdoors in NY City with my documents on the lid of a garbage can  on conference calls needing my approval ASAP for the office in Vancouver. I edited a speech for my then CEO driving on the highway in snowy conditions (hands free) with a writer beside me as we had a 3 hour deadline to delivery.  So I am flexible.

But what is clear to me is that collaboration that requires creativity, innovation and spontaneity that is hard to create in itself requires face to face collaboration. I struggle advising clients with offices across Asia and including Australia as how to generate that collaboration needed to do their work in a matrixed organization where they need each other to work together as their staff are in far off locales. These guys don't need to be creative and still it is a challenge.

This is a crazy, fascinating project of a composer working with NASA to turn data into sound. It's super interesting (although I'm not a huge fan of the composition itself), but even more thought provoking is the potential that lies in using abstract data to move between different input and output formats to find significant patterns in our world.

Great video on Nowness of Daido in Hong Kong. A must see for HK residents. It's always eye-opening to see someone else's perspective on your city. This one is much more interesting than some of the more glossy montages that have been made recently by brands and individuals.

Designers, visual thinkers, internet people... My beloved imgspark has been closed down. Dark are the days.
I am in need of an image bookmarking service and would like your suggestions. I have a Tumblr and Pinterest account already, but use neither for this purpose. Is there another service I should consider before beginning the painful task of adding 3,528 images (with no metadata! That would have been a helpful addition to the export from imgspark +Teehan+Lax ) to shudder Pinterest? Hope I don't run into the mums on Pinterest and have to exchange pineapple upside-down cake recipes or discuss cheap and cheerful solutions to wedding cake toppers...

Loved his airplane series and the freeway series looks great as well. Making time plastic and revealing unobservable patterns.

Jason Schlabach originally shared:

Must agree with this review of Monocle. It roughly charts my own initial like of the magazine and my current disinterest. Analogy below is the best part.

"...She knows difference between Kobi and Wagu. Knows the cool bars in Helsinki. She can speak with authority on which airlines have the best business lounges. At first it’s intoxicating to listen to her - these are all the things you are drawn to in life - but after a while you realize there’s no ‘there’–there; that she fetishizes everything and ultimately this renders everything meaningless and empty. And that’s why you’re breaking up with her.
These are my issues with the issues I receive every month.
It’s jumped it’s own shark."
Monocle magazine, when it arrived, was a compelling combination of all the things I found myself drawn to in life. The editorial premise that stuff – well made products and services hardwired with...
