This evening, I reflect on the endgame of Ingress. No, I'm not talking about +Niantic Project
's next endeavor (http://goo.gl/I5MIIm
). Like most MMO's, I believe the endgame for Ingress to be different things to different people.
With an achievement system in place (I'm talking about you badges!), completionists have something to chase down. The real world is an interesting space for achieving things so expect to see badges, lots of badges...
While badges are one way to keep people hooked in, human beings are social creatures. At its core, Ingress is about socialization.
Some may not like the idea of crossing paths with complete strangers. Unless you live in a remote area, you are bound to cross paths with another Agent. Even in remote areas, the various communities, faction hangouts, etc promote a social aspect. Portals tend to revolve around social places, areas where groups tend to gather. XM anomalies typically coincide with public events that may not necessarily be related to Ingress or have any affiliation with the +Niantic Project
While the endgame can mean different things to different people, I believe that the Ingress endgame, the ultimate mastery of this experimental socialization lies somewhere in the midst of cross faction.
Tensions can run high across faction lines. This certainly isn't the case everywhere but, based on some of the things we read here in the community, I think this situation is more common than we want to admit.
So, to Agents of both Enlightened and Resistance allegiance, I say this: do not judge an Agent by the color of his or her faction. Seek other like minded Agents of your faction as well as those of the opposing faction. Plan field ops that involve both factions and work together to make those operations a success.
Some Agents will be unable to entertain such thoughts. They will show themselves for what they are and, most likely, will not be looked upon favorably within your local community. More preferably, these individuals come to realize that we're all in the portal busting business, it's not personal, just business.
Yes, tensions can certainly run high and maybe it happens more than we'd like to admit. I believe those responsible for creating such situations fall into the minority though. By and large, the +Ingress
Community is full of intelligent and thoughtful people with good intentions and highly creative minds.
We may be divided along faction lines. Regardless of allegiance, we are all human beings. Regardless of allegiance we, the majority, are passionate about Ingress. We, the majority, believe in what Ingress is and what Ingress has the potential to become.
Fellow Agents of both sides, an #EnlightenedResistance
is an evolutionary revolution, an endgame that can not be accomplished by a single faction alone.
Because of this, I believe #EnlightedResistance
to be an endgame that we, the majority, strive to achieve.
