My Happy Place
This photograph of a male painted bunting exemplifies every reason why I photograph birds on private ranches in south Texas each year.

1) I get to see birds that are uncommon or otherwise difficult to photograph
2) By being in a hide (blind) I am far closer to these birds than I could get if I were out in the open
3) The photo blinds are designed to create opportunities for front-lighting with clean backgrounds. There are no distracting elements in the shot, or objects obscuring the subject.

That's just a few of the reasons south Texas bird ranches are my happy place for photography. If you're interested, I'll be taking clients there again in 2016. Drop me a line and let me know!

HDR with Lightroom 6 (CC)
I have put together a comprehensive instructional video tutorial on the new HDR feature in Lightroom CC.
A complete tutorial for HDR image processing in Lightroom CC. Work with HDR Raw images directly in Lightroom, or send them to Photoshop for even more creative effects. The release of Lightroom CC in May 2015 included a brand-new feature: Merge to HDR. Now, you don't need to send images to ...

Hiding in plain sight
This common nighthawk was sitting on her eggs right alongside the trail on the ranch we stayed at in Texas. She did not move whatsoever even when we photographed her. Her nest is basically just a flat spot on the rocks where she can blend in with her surroundings.

Leveling Up
Immature male (yearling) painted bunting, Starr County, TX

The painted bunting is the most colorful bird in North America. Males are red, blue and green, and females are all green. At first I assumed this was the female painted bunting, because of the green color. Upon closer inspection, however, you can see the blue head feathers starting to come in on this immature male. By next year, he'll be awash in color.

A little privacy, please?

With many of the larger telephoto lenses, you'll find a "memory recall" function. This setting lets you pre-focus the lens on a particular spot and then return to that focus point with a single press of a button (usually on the end of the lens). This particular branch was popular, so I pre-focused on it and used memory recall to quickly jump back there when a bird perched on it.

You'll find that your camera will acquire focus very quickly as long as you are focused on something fairly near to the subject. Once I focused on the branch, it was easy to simply pop the focus on the bird and get a solid lock.

My sales representative, Bill, was extremely knowledgeable about all the features of the vehicles my wife and I were interested in. There was no pressure on us whatsoever. Bill made sure that I knew _everything_ about my new Escape before I drove it off the lot.
