This article is a great reminder of how lucky I am. I'm in good financial shape, but I made some of the same choices the writer of this piece did, choices that everyone said were good at the time. If a few things had gone differently - if I had taken on loans to go to a big-name school, if I hadn't fallen back to programming after my liberal arts degree, if I hadn't lucked into an interview at Google - I could have ended up in the same debt trap.

Great talk for anyone who is doing any machine learning work, or anyone interested in machine learning. Or if you just live in a world where computers exist.

Imagine being the person in charge of Jell-O at Kraft. In 30 years your target market went from "just about everyone" to "people who are too sick or injured to eat solid food".

Watching Star Trek with the kids.

Angry Klingon guy, to Worf: "Your father was a TRAITOR!"
Athena, shouting at the TV: "Oh yeah, well your mamma was a FATTY!"

Interesting article on modeling hair for a video game character:
Video games redefining "good hair"

Modeling any hair texture accurately is challenging -- even more so when you don't have prior art to guide you. I love the effort In the Valley of the Gods team puts into accurately depicting Type 4 hair on their POV character Zora. When you live in a world that politicizes something as intimate as the hair on your head, this kind of representation is powerful indeed.

Finn is sitting on the floor looking through his new set of Transformers books.
Finn: "I read all 12 books."
Me: "Wow, you just read all 12 of them? They must be really good books."
Finn: "Yeah, I like them a lot. They are very twelvish."
