As I understand it, that was the maximum sentence for culpable homicide. So, it really depends whether you believe that he shot her accidentally.

The DC Council voted appears poised to pass a bill that is designed to make badly needed changes to the District’s record sealing and expungement laws. If passed, the new bill would allow many convicted of #marijuana  offenses the possibility of having those convictions, arrests, and investigations wiped from their records.

Jason is an accomplished attorney whom I had the privilege of knowing professionally during his tenure as a civil and criminal defense lawyer in Arizona. As a civil lawyer, Jason worked at one the largest and most respected law firms in the state before pursuing his true calling, criminal defense. As a criminal defense lawyer, Jason treated case with a high degree of professionalism. Jason is knowledgeable, aggressive, discrete, and trustworthy. He goes above and beyond for each of his clients. I highly recommend him.

I was facing a serious felony gun charge in DC… locked up and sitting in jail. My family had access to a specific database of attorneys with specific amount of experience, and one of those Attorneys was Jason Kalafat. The US Marshalls moved me into my own cell, and it was initially hard for Jason to find me in jail, but luckily Jason recognized one of the Marshalls, and was able to find me through that connection. After consulting with Jason in Jail, I felt that I had someone in the perfect position to assist me with my situation. I didn’t know a lot about gun violations in DC, and Jason not only educated me about what logically could happen, but there was a level of brutal honesty at what I was looking at. I really appreciated the honesty, He told me the basic law and how ridiculous it is the way these things get processed, but he had the ability to make a strong case on my behalf. I finally got released during my arraignment, and I knew that Jason was the right guy to take care of me. My parents really likes him, and I like him (still like him!), he has a positive manner about him. Jason was so calm about everything, and even though my parents sometimes bugged Jason to the extreme about updates … Jason never complained about it, and always helped out with information. Jason met with me after hours, before hours, during hours, … he knew my case was important and he always made time for me. I remember at one point I heard his kids in the background, but he would still call me for updates and let me know what was going on. It was just sad that I got to know someone with such great character under these really rough circumstances, because I would rather have met Jason at a local pub. Jason just seems like the kind of guy you always want to stay in touch with. Jason got me released from custody, made a great case in front of the judge, and how it was an obvious mistake… I never would intentionally be irresponsible with any firearm or equipment, and I did not deserve to have a felony firearms charge on my record. The Judge agreed … and reduced the charges… Heavily. This was all thanks for making the right decision to hire Jason Kalafat.

I have known Jason Kalafat since our undergraduate years and can attest to the fact that beyond substantive expertise he possesses the traits most critical to functioning as a stellar attorney, namely, being responsive to and dogged in protecting and pursuing his clients' needs. These work habits cannot be taught: they are developed over years, often beginning before one even enters law school. And I say that as a practicing attorney myself.

I have known Jason for nearly 15 years, since he began his practice in Arizona at Snell & Wilmer LLP. During his time practicing in Arizona, he was the first person on my referral list when someone contacted me with a need for representation in a criminal matter. He is adept at handling the legal side of criminal matters, but also understanding and helping with the inevitable emotional issues that come up in such cases. All the while he keeps focus on the objective at hand--getting the right results for his clients.

I have known Jason personally and professionally for over 15 years and have (and would continue to) recommended him to anyone in need of criminal defense representation. While Jason had a promising commercial litigation practice at the largest law firm in AZ, he decided to pursue his passion for criminal law defense and has not looked back since, working his way from public defender's office to becoming a successful criminal defense attorney. While I wish he still practiced full-time here in AZ, I am sure that he is making a positive impact for the criminal defense bar in DC (and our loss is their gain).

I have known Jason personally and professionally for 15 years and would strongly recommend Jason to a client in need of advice regarding criminal matters. I have had in-depth discussions with Jason about his practice, and he brings both passion and significant expertise to his clients. He represents the cutting edge of criminal defense lawyers.

I found Jason Online and I read his reviews and I was impressed. I had never used an attorney and was just starting from scratch. I called the firm, and the initial contact with the firm was great they were so nice and informative. Then I met with Jason. I was really nervous and embarrassed that I was facing a charge and my first meeting with Jason helped me feel SO much better. Jason gave me so much information on what he could do for me and made me feel so much better that this situation wasn’t as bad as I thought. I talked to some other attorneys as well, but no one’s personality or experience really matched Jason’s. So I decided to hire him. Jason really explained everything to me well, and communicated with me effectively. As soon as he got papers from the court, or got any information regarding my case he informed me promptly. The communication level was great. I felt like I could call Jason’s cell at anytime if I had any concern regarding my Case. My case didn’t even go to trial. Jason secured a great agreement that I was not even apparently supposed to be eligible for. Jason did a really GOOD job. After some community service and some wait time my charges are completely dropped. I was overjoyed! I was even offered a lower deal that I didn’t want, but Jason fought for me … and HE got me an amazing deal. The one and only recommendation I would have for someone needing a criminal attorney when facing bogus charges is Jason Kalafat.
