Consistency!

Thanks to everyone who joined the broadcast this morning. I would love to see the conversation about consistency continue here. Share images of your latest work and I'll encourage you to give each other feedback about the consistency of the work based on the consistency criteria I mentioned:

Subject Matter
Theme
Style
Palette
Medium
Presentation

Good to get some feedback on the issue of consistency within the work, however curious about stretching my collection to move beyond the square format I began my series with. I am curious from your stand point; Jason, as a gallery owner and sales person; to know if you consider (as I have been told by one artist friend) that squares don't sell. I used the square because my original concept was to counter the Instagram "selfie" my daughters and their friends post non-stop, with images of female strength, courage, determination, and I was posting my work on instagram. In some ways it was that relationship between between old and new mediums (classical figure painting & social media) I thought was an interesting juxtaposition. Of course at the time I didn't think I would be here, asking myself if galleries would desire more dimensional variety OR perceive my square/instagram related format as part of my brand? As I commit to future paintings I'd love to get your thoughts?

Hello Jason. I was very interested in your blog on negotiating art sales. I am the artist and I have a friend that has part paid $1200 for a large artwork a year and a half ago. She also loved two others and couldn't make up her mind which to get. I gave her a lower offer on the large work of $1800 as I needed the money. (Dropped from $2500) Since then I have  politely let her know that I was putting up some of the work in fundraising exhibitions and that they may sell. I also offered to deliver the large work that was part paid to her home and that she could pay me back later, but she made it clear she was not keen on me doing that as she wanted to wait for her renovations to be finished. I now have another acquaintance wanting to buy the same large work and willing to pay $5000 for it. I have also just spent money to have it framed as the edges of this oil painting are being knocked around and I want it to be presented well. I am not sure where I stand legally with this situation and would really appreciate some feedback from you, if possible.
I wondered if it was appropriate to return the $1200 to her so that she wasn't out of pocket, and I would also have the funds to do that once I sell this artwork. Or am I locked into a financial agreement that I cannot break??
Yours sincerely Heather Cohen

One question that I received after the broadcast from Dianna:

"Judith did such a beautiful job with the box, packing, etc.  Is it too rude to ask how much the shipment actually cost?"

Great question. Judith was able to ship the box to us for $109 (UPS charges, not including packing materials or time)

It was a great session, thank you Jason and Judith.  I was particularly interested to hear your opinion about not dating your works - good tip!

Welcome to our Mentorship Community Page! This page will serve as a forum to discuss topics that come up in the broadcast sessions, but it's also an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another.

As we all join the community, I encourage you to introduce yourself in a post. Include a photo of a recent piece, let us know where you live, and tell us a little about your artistic background.

Welcome to the Mentorship Community!!!

Please take a moment to share an image of one of your most recent works and tell us a little bit about yourself. Where is your studio located? How long have you been creating? How did you develop your style? Do you show in galleries? What else should we know about you?

Some additional resources for researching pricing: art-collecting.com, amazon.com/art

Both will give you access to galleries in various parts of the country. Don't get all of your research from any one resource, but you can add these to your research mix.

Hi Jason,
First I would like to say that I am really getting a lot out of the webcasts and all the topics and material we are covering. It has been very very informative.
I am really embarrassed to mention that I am having a lot of trouble with this google +, I have not until now even been able to find how to comment on the posts or get to posts or write my own comments??? Now for the first time I have found a post with a comment box and am reaching out here. On your first post Welcome to the Mentorship community there is no comment box that allows me to communicate with anyone. I also see that a lot of the comments you are posting I do not have the option of interacting with other than +1, ???. Is anyone else having this issue. Can you link me to a site or place that will teach me how to use this google +. (specifically how to add comments to a post) I could not find anything relevant when I tried to google how to post etc.... I know it is really something simple but when you don't know you just don't know. This google + is new for me and I am looking forward to figuring it out.
Thanks for your guidance in advance.

After a break for the summer, Barney Davey and Jason Horejs are back with the Art 2 Market broadcast. For this month's session they'll be discussing what each believes to be the 5 most important sales skills.

To make things interesting, both Jason and Barney are compiling their lists of skills separately, without seeing one another's lists. They will compare, contrast and comment on each of their five points.

Join us for his free broadcast to see if they are in agreement on which skills are paramount for an artist who is trying to sell his or her work.
