A new study released by the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs indicated that more than 40% of alleged designated drivers do not abstain from drinking, they simply drink less than they normally would. Also, almost 20% of alleged designated drivers will exceed the legal Blood Alcohol Level, which is currently 0.08%, when they get in the car.
A survey of many drivers across the United States voiced the opinion that it’s okay for designated drivers to drink, so long as their BAC doesn’t exceed the legal limit. However, this just isn’t true. Multiple studies have shown that cognitive ability, perception, and physical response type starts to significantly lag at around 0.05%, which is well below the current legal limit in the United States. Mild impairment begins as low as 0.02%!
