The Numpty's Guide to Publishing a Post or Page on WordPress

A step-by-step guide to publishing a post or page on a #WordPress website (.com or .org). There are also overviews of how to use the Yoast SEO plugin, image sizes and editing, #metadata, character lengths and, well, yes: the kitchen sink.

I put this presentation together for the Birmingham City University (BCU) B2B marketing team whilst I was on contract there at the end of 2017.

They were launching a €22M project in Digbeth, STEAMhouse, for launch in early 2018.

I joined at the tail end to help coordinate the final stage strategy, namely to bring the site live and on time and make sure all stakeholders (internal and external) were involved and kept in the loop.

As well as liaising with the copy agency and social media and central marketing teams, I even did the photoshoot for the team profiles, LOL. It was a valuable - if not frustrating at times - experience.

This presentation I put together for the guys for when my contract expired using the dev site rather than the live STEAMhouse web property. Not that they were numpties, of course, but this does cover all the basic elements.

Train yourself to get into the habit of making a firm decision before you wipe the sleep out of your eyes.

By doing so, you have a far better chance of realising the outcome of that decision than if you sit at the breakfast bar waiting to get the right exposure for your Cloud Wars submission or wondering what you're going to do today over your first, second and third cups of coffee.

Thus being assertive will not only stave off the demon of #procrastination, but will also put you one step closer to developing the #SniperMind

Why people use #AdBlock?

4 Ads in an 1105x705 px space, with at least 50/50 content v ads screen fill ratio.

If that's not bad enough, scroll down and you'll see:
• "Sponsored" Content grids betwixt the paragraphs,
• more +Outbrain content at the bottom, and
• a sidebar stuffed with, you guessed it, more ads.

Sometimes, AdWords users are their own worst enemy, but why kill it for #legitimate advertisers?

Moreover, they're imbuing visitors with a negative bias against the host advertiser, in this case +AdWords and the aforementioned Outbrain.

Should the advertising platform take some responsibility for the amount of ads displayers are allowed to embed compared to the content it's nestled aside/amongst?

All parties should #GetAGrip of this situation before everyone loses out.

Getting Technical with SEO: What not to do

Last week, I had occasion to get stuck into the technical - or forensic - aspects of SEO, undertaking a site audit and looking for other opportunities, for which I used the +SEMrush tool.

It was fascinating. Not only can you understand the opportunities to better your own site, but you can also get visibility into what your competition is up to and finally see where you are in that mix and plan a meaningful ongoing strategy.

The pieces begin to fall into place: #KnowledgeGraph extrapolation (at last)

In 2014, I uploaded two presentations to SlideShare:

The concepts of writing machine- and human-readable content outlined therein were - back then - poo-pooed out of hand. Now, they're eventually being seen as meaningful.

What were "Relationships" in the previous iteration of Alchemy API - a tool so important to helping search indexers grasp the underlying topicality of your content, it's an imperative - have evolved into "Semantic Roles".

In short, these "roles" constitute the knowledge triples that search indexers use to refer to knowledge bases to corroborate what an author is saying.

If the corroboration is strong with what Google, etc. already know, then their SERPs can display content with confidence for relevant search queries.

This move has been a long time coming - longer than many people know (but not all, as +David Amerland's referenced article in +Teodora Petkova's post clearly demonstrates).

For a long time, trying to get the message across (not just me, but a small band of merry men and women) that content with entity disambiguation (#KBT) would be ultimately stronger than link-bait copy felt like lying face forward on the hood of a car, getting the driver to take it up to 70 mph and drive straight into the nearest wall.

This refusal to believe (possibly because so many businesses based their offering around building backlinks) eventually ended my love affair with G+.

But now there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Knowledge-Based Trust will strengthen, support and even shape the Knowledge Graphs that are now becoming readily visible. And about time.

Was Google Authorship a total failure? I think not.

Much of the background work that went into Authorship we can - if we use a little imagination - see in the future of search engines rendering relevant content to user queries.

It was never about showing pictures in SERPs. It was about learning to reference Knowledge Bases for specific information. In that context, the program proved a small victory.

If you've not yet had the belief to "Embrace it, or risk extinction" or "Adapt or be irrelevant" (https://goo.gl/uZuQW9 #18), you've still got time; make your:
• copy clear, bold and concise;
• reader your priority when you write;
• relationships between your entities crystal clear;
• content around entities (people, services, locations, businesses) contextual and topical;
• context around your outbound links expressly topical to the anchor text and destination content.

That'll do ya fine for starters. Thank ya big-big.
I see Knowledge Graphs Everywhere!

A great article I found via +Aaron Bradley, in which Paul Hobcraft is talking about Siemens’ Knowledge Graph and raises some good questions:

What if we can suddenly scale, have availability in different ways and design, be able to query in fast, reliable, easy and open ways? What does that do for knowledge? It opens it up finally, our silos of knowledge become challenged, ready to be built upon and capable of being changed with updated knowledge. Knowledge and insights lead to innovation. Doubts about what exactly a knowledge graph is and how it is different from a graph database aside [ref. Remember when #10BlueLinks was a pretty static feature?

Well, those days are long gone. Even #Snippets in #SERPs are fluctuating so much that they need a composite article written about them to describe what's occurring.
