I would like to nominate the Pew Research Center for a Captain Obvious Award.

But seriously, good to know how deep is the divide. We have some work to do in order to bring our fellow citizens up to speed, fellow scientists!
A Pew Research Center study shows that the two groups disagree most strongly on the safety of GM foods, the use of animals in research, climate change and human evolution.

Orionid meteor shower, for you early risers, look toward Orion before sunrise this Tuesday. Should be ESE from here in the Midwest US. Enjoy!
Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, parent of the annual Orionid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on Tuesday, Oct. 21st.

If you are in the right location, tomorrow morning you should be able to see the eclipsed moon and the sunrise at the same time. Clear skies predicted here. :)
Weather permitting, on Wednesday morning you'll be able to see the second lunar eclipse visible in North America in a series of four that runs through next year.

New super geeky blog post: 5 More Real Creatures Named After Sci-Fi & Fantasy Stories

In a previous post, I introduced the importance of a proper scientific for a specific animal species. It is necessary for each described species to have a unique name to avoid confusion. Usually the name should be informative. There are some very specific…

Crossing fingers for a clear sky tonight.
Comet Lovejoy should brighten from 5th magnitude in late December 2014 to 4th in January 2015, high in a dark sky for the Northern Hemisphere.

http://www.compoundchem.com/2014/06/08/catnip/
Everyone knows cats go crazy for catnip. It's an effect that's been noted in scientific literature as far back as the 18th Century, when scientists observed that cats seemed to be attracted to catn...

Totally trying this one out later. :D

In this easy and simple experiment, we use a syringe to show how water can be made to boil at a temperature lower than the normal boiling temperature and give an explanation of why this happens.
