Suburbia is often experienced as a great, non-articulated existential malaise, like depression. You know it sucks, but it’s hard to say exactly why.

I don't know - I live in a very walkable suburb, and I know of many similar ones. That article is thirty years late, it seems to me.

The contemporary world is not very well built for a large chunk of males. ... men did better in the age of “technological progress without globalization” rather than “globalization without technological progress,” as has been the case as of late.
Donald Trump may get the nuclear suitcase, a cranky “park bench” socialist took Hillary Clinton to the wire, many countries are becoming less free, and the neo-Nazi party came very close to assuming power in Austria. I could list more such events. Haven’t you, like I, wondered what is up? What the hell is going …

In Oracle v. Google, a Nerd Subculture Is on Trial
The problem with Oracle v. Google is that everyone actually affected by the case knows what an API is, but the whole affair is being decided by people who don’t.

Notice, that revenue per employee is just about the same at LinkedIn, which is considered healthy and successful, and at Yahoo! that gets a lot of unflattering press for poor business results.

And Twitter is 1/3 as productive per employee as Facebook.

The company behind the game is collecting players' data. And it's most definitely catching them all.

Software wants to be free.
In other news, this Oracle's attorney seems to consider "competitive" and "harmful" synonyms.

Working at corporate universities, professors often become "beleaguered, managed, frantic, stressed, and demoralized," Berg and Seeber say. It's as if there can never be enough product generated (grants, jargon-laden documents about students' learning outcomes, committee white papers) in the hours available.
College teachers are often stressed and demoralized, says anthropologist Barbara J. King, and a new book on the corporate university provides startling answers as to why.

Guido Menzio, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania, was pulled off of an American Airlines regional jet from Philadelphia to Syracuse because he was doing math. As Alex Tabarrok observes, Algebra has "Arabic origins plus math is used to make bombs."

+Jane Prusakova You don't control for IQ. You take their stuff, check their butt holes and sedate them all, independently of the IQ. The ones with excessive IQ ought to stop flying.

This place sends frivolous bills and threats to people who are not their customers. Watch out, they provide no services and just want your money.

Nice looking building in a good location. That's there the good stuff ends. Non-working A/C, broken and very noisy vent in the bathroom, smelly dirty carpet is disintegrating from the Houston humidity. I reported the problem to the manager, she was not interested. Lumpy bed, paper-thin walls, threadbare towels with holes all contribute to a poor night's sleep. Skip this hotel, and sleep under the bridge for similar quality of accommodations. Like other reviews mention, the owner of the hotel is very rude and does not honor reservations made through La Quinta Returns.
