Guide to Space: How Are Planets Formed?

How did the Solar System’s planets come to be? The leading theory is something known as the “protoplanet hypothesis”, which essentially says that very small objects stuck to each other and grew bigger and bigger — big enough to even form the gas giants, such as Jupiter.

But how the heck did that happen?

Find out here: http://www.universetoday.com/85761/protoplanet-hypothesis/

Organic Molecules Found by Philae Lander on Comet

We all read about the marvelous accomplishment of sending the Rosetta spacecraft on a 10 year long journey to the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and the landing (bouncing) of the Philae lander.

The washing machine sized lander after bouncing over a kilometer finally came to rest next to a cliff that blocked the sun from recharging the batteries so the lander only had its battery power to do experiments.  The results of those experiments have been beamed back to earth and are just beginning to be analyzed.

On 12 November, the Rosetta comet orbiter dropped Philae from an altitude of 22.5 kilometers. It took about 7 hours for the washing machine–sized probe to drift to the surface of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, a duck-shaped comet about 4 kilometers long. First came a big bounce, a sign that the comet’s black crust of dust, organic molecules, and ice is harder than thought. Philae rebounded at the speed of a slow walk. In the weak gravity, it reached a height of a kilometer and may have flown laterally another kilometer. After a second, smaller bounce, it finally came to awkward stop—tipped up on its side and sitting in the shadows of some sort of cliff wall, with scant sunlight to recharge its batteries.   ⓒ

The Philae lander has detected organic molecules on the surface of its comet, scientists have confirmed.  ⓐ

The compounds were picked up by a German-built instrument designed to "sniff" the comet's thin atmosphere.  ⓐ

Dr Fred Goessmann, principal investigator on the Cosac instrument, which made the organics detection, confirmed the find to BBC News. But he added that the team was still trying to interpret the results.  ⓐ

While it will take scientists a while to sift through the data collected by Philae, it looks like the probe has sent home some interesting new results. Before shutdown, one of Philae's instruments managed to "sniff" the first organic molecules detected in the atmosphere of the comet, officials with the DLR German Aerospace Center said. However, scientists still aren't sure what kind of organics — carbon-containing molecules that are the building blocks of life on Earth — were found.  ⓑ

The spacecraft managed to beam back evidence of the carbon and hydrogen–containing chemicals shortly before it entered hibernation mode to conserve falling power supplies.  ⓓ

Although scientists are still to reveal what kind of molecules have been found on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the discovery could provide new clues about how the early chemical ingredients that led to life on Earth arrived on the planet.  ⓓ

Many scientists believe they may have been carried here on an asteroid or comet that collided with the Earth during its early history.  ⓓ

Jupiter & Callisto on 11-18-2014...@ 11:30 U.T.
After De-icing the Observatory Dome last evening,..I was hoping the Dome shutter would stay free of ice and snow through morning...and Yeah it did!! Here is Jupiter early this morning! I put on my Arctic -40F Gear this morning to take a crack at Jupiter and its Moon Callisto, the other moons were out of the FOV. The Great Red Spot (GRS) is a persistent anticyclonic storm, 22° south of Jupiter's equator; observations from Earth establish a minimum storm lifetime between 300 and 400 years. You can see the Great Red Spot(a 400+ mile per hour storm) heading out around the Western Limb.(lower right). The Great Red Spot has been visible on the planet since the Invention of the telescope..over 400 years!
But it never fails, clouds started to plague me right after I got aligned and ready to image around 5:30am, so extreme patience in the brutal cold was the key! Finally got a clear spot long enough to snap off this RGB set around 6:30am!
Captured with the QHY5IIL Mono CCD camera, Optec Intelligent Filter wheel, Astronomiks RGB filters, 2x Barlow, & 10" SCT scope. Total of 3588 RGB AVI frames stacked in Registax 6. Captured from my backyard observatory in Dayton at 6:30am this morning. BRRRRRR!!!
Best Regards,
John Chumack
