Not really anything new here. But still an interesting read.
WIRED sat down with Joi Ito, the director of the MIT Media Lab, to discuss this phenomenon of convergence, where digital bits from the computer world are fusing with atoms here in the physical world (see gallery above). The trend is advancing, he says, and it won't stop at gadgets. For Ito, the next great engineering platform will be living matter itself.

Law & Ethics -

A proposal for a "Magna Cortica":

1. The right to self-knowledge

2. The right to self-modification

3. The right to refuse modification

4. The right to modify/refuse to modify your children

5. The right to know who has been modified

Number 5 looks like it could be controversial because of privacy issues. Number 4 runs into ethical issues, I think.
The analysts at the Institute for the Future present new research about our weird times.

Competing ethics.
After a New York restaurant asked a patron to remove her Google Glass, partisans in the technology culture war began duking it out with positive and negative online reviews.

Research -

Everything's connected
One morning in May 1998, Kevin Tracey converted a room in his lab at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, N.Y., into a makeshift operating theater and then prepped his patient — a rat — for surgery. A neurosurgeon, and also Feinstein Institute's president, Tracey had spent ...

You should check out Object Oriented Ontology which talks about a flat ontology where everything from ideas to fiction to materialism shares the same ontological plane.

An interesting take on (the limits of) AI.
Computers match or surpass top humans in a wide variety of games: Othello, Scrabble, backgammon, poker, even Jeopardy. But not Go. It's the one classic game where wetware still dominates hardware.

"It can also expand hearing beyond normal human levels: the experimental version picks up radio waves, for example."
