“Amazon withdraws DIY vasectomy kits!!!”

Hey

Happy Friday!!

A new dinner conversation and a happy holiday note -

First the new dinner table conversation for you:

Lucy (my wife) was laughing this morning

What’s funny? I asked

“Amazon are removing their DIY Vasectomy kits"

???

I needed to see that myself

It is real, and you can see it here too: New Zealand Herald Website http://jamielikes.me/nzherald

But Seriously...

There are some things you can DIY

and there are some things

you

really

shouldn’t:
• Vasectomy
• Heart Surgery
• Flying Helicopters
• <<add your own shake-your-head-really-shouldn't one here>>

and to finish off the list, I’ll put Online Marketing in here too

Why would I add that you ask?

If you’re still trying to do it yourself, and it’s not working, then why keep trying yourself???

Now is a really good time to get everything ready for when your potential perfect clients come back to start their year

And getting it right is really important, or you'll just be feeding our friends at Google or Facebook, instead of feeding your family

Actually, that sounds a bit harsh

But unfortunately it's true

So upto you as we head into the perfect time of year to get ready for next year -

Do you want to spend your own time and money to potentially not get it right

Or spend extra time and money WITH HELP to increase your chances of it working

...Snip snip...

(that's you cutting up dollar bills by the way if it's not working,

what else did you think it was???)

If you're DIYing your Online Marketing, and you think you should stop, then stop

and start being smarter

asking for help is a start, even if its to point you in the right direction

I’ll leave that with you

And hopefully you’ve got some lovely time with close ones planned your side!?!

(I’ll be heading down to Queenstown for a part of the holidays, and experiencing the Milford Sound track) http://jamielikes.me/milfordsoundwalks

Whatever you are doing, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!! :O)

Jamie

“ working smarter”

Hey

Happy Friday!

Hope you're doing great today?

In today's Friday message:

I want to share something really personal with you

(and a really quick tip on how to work a lot smarter)

The personal part goes back to when I was about 12, maybe 14

I don't know when specifically

but let's just say I was pretty young, and I vividly remember one day walking home from my local shops...

...and on the way home, I was walking down a road

shaped like S bend

so you'd normally weave around the roads and pavements to get yourself home

but there just came a defining moment for me when I looked at these curves in front of me and thought to myself,

“Hold on

there's a straight line if I walked from here to that point over there...

Why do I need to go the long way around???"

And almost ever since that point, as I thought back, I've always been looking for ways to get from A to B the quickest way possible

to be smarter about everything I do.

And now 20+ years into the professional world, and getting paid for results, it's all about working out how to work smarter, to get more done

And for yourself, working smarter is really like any other topic, and you probably fit into one of three categories -

Either,

a. you know you want to work smarter, but you don't know what questions to ask,
b. you're stuck on a very specific challenge, which is slowing you down day in, day out, and you wish you could fix it
c. you don't realise how much smarter you could actually work - you haven't seen the "other side" :)

In my past couple of offers in my emails of offering people help with technology, I've been getting a steady stream of really great questions, and I've been really enjoying answering them and giving help.

The same offer applies to you, right now, for working smarter:

Where in your life or your business would you love to be able to work smarter?

Just let me know

Email me

I would love to help,

and as an extra side note,

I have a new business that I'll tell you about soon:

how I'm going to be helping a lot more people work smarter.

But that's not now

Now is the offer for you to get help to work smarter,

Have a great rest of your Friday!

Bye for now
Jaime

P.S. A really great example about working smarter is one of the emails I'd received from someone about tech help, and that question was:

"Hey, which time-management tool I could use to track my time so I can see where my time is going?"

I answered it, and I gave a tech help, but...

...another way to look at that same question would be this:

am i being productive in my days?

time management helps, sure

but you're usually looking backwards, not forward

Potentially, another way to look at it is with this question:

"What really important three things do I want to get done this week?"

And then when you sit down and start the day, "What's the most three important things I want to get done TODAY?"

Then, the question is, if you get those done, does that mean you're productive?

Do you need to track your time accurately, if you're achieving what you want to get achieved?

Potentially, that's working smarter. :)

Let me know how I can help.

Hear from you soon.

“it’s all about perspective”

Hey

Happy Friday!!

Hope you've had a great week this week?

School holidays just finished this side - yes I love my kids - I seem to love them more when they're back at school though... ;)

Today's note is about perspective -

It’s really interesting when we look at what we do in terms of 'perspective'

Right now, I’m looking after a project for a client, who's expecting more than a million visitors to his website, in the first few days of next month.

Millions.

In a small number of days.

The perspective on that is:

I remember looking at a landing page I'd build for a client, that had reached one million visitors, and thought that was pretty cool

That was over a year.

And now we're talking about a few days.

That’s perspective for you

And Brian, in Optimize Me http://jamielikes.me/optimizeme , has a great way to describe this:

Looking at things with a telescope or a microscope

Here's how you can use it your side:

Sometimes when you have a problem, you need to put a microscope on it to be able to get really deep -

to put all your energies into it,

to be able to resolve the problem and then move forwards

On the flip side of that, is the telescope perspective

Sometimes you might think of problem is the end of the world,

but if you just step back and look at it using a telescope -

(and take a deep breath as you do this...)

you’ll realise that problem is a tiny dot in the big landscape that we call life

So

just remember this:

whatever your challenge is today,

put perspective on it,

and see if that helps you!

And remember last weeks email?

if you need any help with anything technology related,

comment below let me help you and in

let me help you

(and in turn you’re going to help me hit my goal of helping a hundred people with technology in the next 90 days)

I'll put a bit of perspective on your tech, and make any problem go away :)

Have a great rest of the day,

and have a lovely weekend!

Warmly,
Jamie

“if you had one Tech wish...”

Hey

Happy Friday!

A really quick one today

Instead of me sharing something with you,

I’m offering to help you with something…

And it’s this:

If you could get ONE THING in your business or life fixed, in the technology space, what would it be?

Comment below,

let me know,...

...why am I asking??

Because I’ve set myself a goal of helping 100 people with tech in the next 90 days,

so by commenting, you’ll be helping me too!! 😃

Over to you

How can I help?

Have a lovely weekend!

Jamie

p.s.

there’s no catches here

or hidden gotchas

this is me realising the thing i’ve wanted to do for years is just one hurdle away

and that’s asking enough people what they want help with (in the tech space)

then craft the answers

help them

and then doing that over and over

(my massive goal is to help 100,000 people with tech)

and whilst i’ve likely helped more than a thousand over the past number of years, I’d not put structured logic to it

but to start,

this message,

and my offer of help,

is to get that big ball rolling…

...when do you plant the oak tree?

yep,

or now :)

(back to you: how can i help you with tech?)

“too busy for your partner?”

Hey

Happy Friday!!

What I’m sharing today will either be absolutely no help to you whatsoever, or it could be quite an important shift in your life, and you’ll say thank you

It’s about relationships

About the relationship with the person who’s the most important person in your life:

Your:
- wife
- husband
- partner
- whatever you call them

And you’d be right to ask: "what the #*&! do you know about relationships Jamie???”

...and I’m also asking myself: what makes me want to share what I’m about to share?

Well, I’m an:
- entrepreneur
- who runs 2 businesses
- spends a lot of time helping local community projects
- has a beautiful wife
- and three growing daughters
- so has A LOT going on…

(** A LOT might be an understatement)

…and so what I did myself was look to answer the question:
“how can I be a better husband, with so much going on??”

And I made some good progress, and thought:

By sharing what I've learnt, and what I experienced, I’m pretty sure it’ll help someone…

…I wonder if that someone is you?? 😃

I’ll share a little bit here, and if this early bit is helpful, let me know, and I’ll send you more over -

Important points:
1. You love your other half
2. You want to be the best other half you can be
3. If you feel you’re not doing that today, then step 1 is to make a decision: yes, I want to be better
4. But how do you do this, when there’s not a lot of time in our busy lives today?
5. We need to make sure we’re using what time we have, as effectively as possible…

Agreed?

OK great - now we’ve cleared that bit up, do this for me:

picture two people talking different languages to each other, and not getting through to each other

that’s one extreme example - let’s call that “crappy communicator”

this ‘other end of the scale’ example isn’t likely you, but you might be down this side of the scale, and when we don’t have much quality time, spending it miscommunicating is not going to help anyone...

and on the other end of the scale, where everything you say (or do) is both understood perfectly by your partner, AND “fills their bucket” too - that’s where we want to be - let’s have some fun here, and call you the “Perfect Poet” :)

And so how do we get closer to being the poet, in the time we do spend with our loved one?
1. understand each person has their own “language"
2. once you understand that, you can use it
3. you’ll see pretty instant results
4. then you just need to keep practicing!!

It is really that simple

All you need to do is:
a. figure out your partners language
b. use it, and build up their ‘bucket’
c. identify yours, and help your partner understand how best to communicate with you

(so you can both be poets together :) )

If this would help you (or your partner), just comment below, say yes, and I’ll send you over my personal notes so far on what i’ve learnt,

Yes, it’s a bit different from marketing or tech or growing a business, but it’s a massively important part of us, as we grow…

Lemme know!

Cheers
Jamie

"getting clarity"

Hey

Happy Friday!

In today’s Friday Thought, I’m going to walk you through a two step process to clear your mind, and there's a great movie and a couple of books (if you need them)

It can be a very quick exercise (to get clear in your head), and it can also take quite a lot of time (to fix it longer term)

Depends on how much help you need ;)

If you’ve watched any of Brian’s lessons over at http://jamielikes.me/optimizeme (I shared this in the last friday thought), he talks about offence and defence - and we can use both of those here too:

Let me explain:

Firstly:

“Stuff” is my term for mess

clutter

whatever fills your mind or space, and is stopping you from doing your most important work

(ie you need to get clear mind, so you can get clarity on everything else around you!)

The two-step approach is this:
1. clear your mind (aka defence)
2. clear your wider environment (aka offence)

Let’s look at how to clear your mind first:

If you’ve studied how the brain works, you’ll know you can only store 4-7 things in the working part of your brain (the front bit),

And the back part is literally unlimited storage

If you’ve seen the film Inside Out (by Pixar) it does an awesome job at teaching you this

(i still use that film today to teach my kids about the brain and emotional intelligence!!)

David Rock does a really great job in teaching this too in his book, and how I originally found it back in the day when I did brain based coaching - that’s here: http://jamielikes.me/yourbrainatwork

So once we understand that the front part can only hold a small number of things, we need to empty it

Now you need a place to empty it

But important:

Whatever tool you use, make sure:
- it’s with you most of the time (or in easy reach)
- you can’t lose it
- it’s easy to use

why?

because if it doesn’t tick ALL of those three, your brain won’t trust it,

and your brain will hold on to the thoughts like a kid holds onto a favourite doll

(and it’ll fight you if you try and take it’s thought, and put it somewhere that isn’t safe!!)

(I hope that makes sense )

For me, I use evernote for my emptying

It’s on all my devices, it ticks all those boxes, and my brain trusts it,

so once i write it down, I’m good.

So step 1 to clear “stuff” our job is to empty the front bit of our brain -

- Write it down
- in somewhere your brain trusts
- and you’ll be good to go!!

If you have bouts of overwhelm, that little trick will help you massively.

.

.

Now we’ve sorted our brain clutter (via defence), we can sort out the rest of our environment

Let’s go on the offence...

Be proactive

How can we make sure our environment around us is tidy?

Because a messy space around us just adds clutter to our mind and our thinking…

You can be as extreme as i have recently, where I’ve:
- moved half my house around
- put three kids into one room (instead of a room each)
- changed the spare rooms into functional rooms
- had a garage sale (yard sale for my US friends)
- and taken 3 car loads of ‘stuff’ to the charity shop

why?

because like our minds - any space around you, if not given a specific job to do, will be filled with ‘stuff’

If

you

let

it

So control your environment, to keep the clutter to a minimum, and enjoy the peace of mind…

(you’re welcome)

By the way, a great book on this is: http://jamielikes.me/thelifechangingmagicoftidyingup

(it’s on blinkist too)

Blinkist is here if you’ve not tried it yet: http://jamielikes.me/blinkist

If you’ve got any questions or lessons on how you clear your mind, i’d love to hear

And for now, have a great rest of your day!

Hopefully with a clearer mind, and a lot less “stuff” ;)

Jamie

p.s. even though i’ve just referenced blinkist, I’ve actually just paused my subscription...

Why?

Because the philosophers notes in Optimize Me do most of the same for me, so this $10 a month I’m paying (that i signed up for after the 30 day sample) has already paid itself back multiple times (not just in replacing other tools i pay for, but the clarity in thinking it’s giving me!)

You should check it out if you haven’t already - nothing to lose - 30 days of smarter thinking are free :): http://jamielikes.me/optimizeme

“who helps the helper?”

Hey

Happy Friday!

How's everything your side of the world today?

In today's Friday Thought, it'll take me less than 2 minutes to share with you the resources I use, that could help you, in your current entrepreneurial/life journey...

And it all started from my gym visit today:

I've just back from the gym, and my personal trainer was hobbling about with a sore back and I asked him what happened.

And his answer was: "I went to another gym, worked out, and hurt myself!"

“You need a really good trainer too!" I said, unhelpfully! :)

He agreed.

We laughed.

But what's interesting about this, is that this guy just recently came back from competing in the Mr. Universe competition over in Brazil, and he came 5th in the world in Mr. Universe!!

That's pretty impressive considering he'd only decided the year before he'd try for Mr. Universe,

and he's the type of guy who really walks the talk when he's helping train other people.

Side note: no, I'm not going to suddenly look like Arnie in the next holiday snaps you see of me on Facebook :)

(he does though)

But this conversation got me thinking...

"who helps the helper??"

If you're anything like me, you spend your time helping people,

really helping everyone around you,

but who helps the helper??

...who is helping you?

And as we go on this journey -

call it your life journey,

call it an entrepreneurial journey,

call it whatever you want journey,

it's always good to have the right type of help - for you - for where you are in your journey.

Whether it's one-on-one help and you pay for a coach to work with you,

whether it's in a group setting, which works for some people and can work really well for some people,

or if it's self-led -

potentially, you're following videos, trainings, etc, by yourself, and you're motivated enough to do that.

It all depends on what works for you.

Personally, I have a blended approach.

And I have a little of all three.

So I thought I'd share a couple of the resources I use today, in case they can help you too:

The first one is my own personal coach, my one-on-one coach.

Her name is Dottie.

She's an absolutely lovely lady over in America.

Her specialty is helping entrepreneurs get to the next level.

If you're looking for that type of help, drop me a note. I'll happily facilitate an introduction.

In terms of group, I have a number of groups that I'm part of and the groups I'm a part of are dependent on the specialty of the groups.

Whether it's:
- marketing,
- marketing automation,
- copywriting,
- technology,

...it just depends on what I want to keep on top of

and also where I want to add value to,

(because quite a lot of times I'm helping people in those groups).

Then, there's the leveraged courses and online courses.

One I've recently been using which has blown my mind in terms of the amount of value for such small cost is Brian Johnson at http://jamielikes.me/optimizeme

You can actually sign up for free 30 days - he'll send you daily snippets - and if you like it, then it's $10 a month

I think I make $1 if you sign up, so this isn't about the money, just a really great resource i thought may help you :)

That's it from me for now,

Just a little extra something to help you on your own journey...

Enjoy the rest of your Friday!

Jamie

p.s. The bio hacking is continuing - I'm back to a metabolic age of 26 - yay! - (versus the real age of 41), and in the testing of daily supplements, I've gone back to relying on "Nitro Extreme" - it's a pretty powerful supplement if you do a lot of sports and/or need help with any type of muscle recovery - if you're pushing pretty hard with exercise, or needing help with muscle issues, you should try it and see if it works for you - that's here: http://jamielikes.me/nitroextreme (just login as a guest when you visit that page)

“the grass is always greener...”

hey

good morning!

and happy Friday!! :)

In today’s 2 minute Friday thought, you'll:
- see a very simple framework in action
- how figuring out the right question is the most valuable first step to fixing any problem you have right now
- why "the grass is always greener" is a trap to watch out for
- my biohacking update :)

Let’s jump right in:

I just had a really interesting chat with a chap, and wanted to share what happened with you…

…this guy is going to be really successful,

and there's two traits that stood out to me -

For context:
1. he’s a consultant,
2. he was talking to me about my team and I running all the delivery for him, and
3. we were figuring out together where he should best focus his marketing and sales efforts
(that covers 3 of my 7 step framework: Marketing, Sales, Delivery)

…and while we were talking, I asked him:

"where are you in the world?"

“West London”

I checked the time

It was 11.05am for me (in NZ)

“so its past midnight your side??”

“yep”

“so you must really want this to work???”

“yes!"

That was the impressive trait number one.

Someone with that much drive, to do whatever it takes to make something work.

He was talking to as many people as possible, to learn as quickly as possible, to make his goals a reality.

Good on him.

The second thing that came from our talk was his focus…

He was looking to pick a target market that he thought could scale -

he'd been looking into high-end kitchen fitters, or similar high-end furniture stores -

- he’d researched them,
- he’d seen their marketing was quite poor (putting it nicely), and
- he saw an opportunity there,

but (and an important 'but')

- he didn’t really have a passion for it

so I asked him:
what are you very good at, AND have had great success at?

“CRO for SAAS companies” was his answer

just in case you haven’t heard those terms before:
CRO = Conversion Rate Optimisation - the term used when someone looks to improve every step of your online marketing
SAAS = Software as a Service - i.e. an online product, think Xero for accounting or Office365

he listed some very cool companies he’d worked with, that would be very (very) good testimonials

“so why don’t you focus on getting more of those clients?” I asked

“I don’t know how to scale the delivery of that business”

…and in the words from the movie iRobot: “That’s the right question!”

(I spent the next 15 minutes helping him understand how he could fix that problem)

And voila

Now someone who’s an expert in something, can scale his business, in doing something he loves, and is very good at,

versus trying to build something new and making it much harder for himself…

…and the important lesson here is this:

Be careful: The grass always seems greener on the other side

Take the time to figure out where your real problem is,

before jumping into something new

.

And so for this chap,

instead of trying to fix one problem (get more sales)

with the wrong answer (try new client type),

figuring out the right question (how do I scale the Delivery of what I love) is the way to go…

And he left very happy indeed

On that note -

if you’re stuck trying to figure out how to scale either your Marketing, Sales or Delivery, just let me know,

happy to jump on a call and see what we can do together

Have a lovely rest of your day!
Bye for now
Jamie

p.s. on another grass is always greener topic, I’m still going with my ‘biohacking’ - trying different mixes of bulletproof coffees/multivitimans/exercise… and getting some quite interesting results - if you’ve got a reasonably busy life (work/kids/taxi service/volunteering/some type of social life), then I’ll be sharing what i’m learning with you soon!! “a vibrator story”

Good morning

In today’s friday thought, you’ll hear about:
- quite a funny miscommunication
- how you can learn from someone else’s misfortunue (for your own benefit)
- and a less smutty example

But…

…let me be clear -

this is NOT a smutty email

disclaimer: any smut that comes from this email will mostly be from whatever comes from your mind

just sayin’

ok? :)

So…

Let’s get into the story:

“I’ve got a vibrator story for you Jamie”…

…was the start of a sentence, near the end of a 90 minute marketing session I was having with a local business owner…

He had a half-cocked sheepish smile on his face

His right hand lady was sat across from him holding a poker face,

and I wondered where the hel! this story was headed!?!?

“So in the building trade, we use a big electric vibrator to flatten concrete after it’s been laid”

(if you have a smutty mind, then you’ve already seen the extra jokes here, but keep reading…)

big electric vibrator = You will have seen a workman using them on roadworks, flattening the road out...

“And so i asked the office lady to ring the local hire company to arrange one for our next job”

“she then rang them and very innocently, and business like, said:

“Hi, I need a large electric vibrator please, can you help?”

…there was a pause for a little too long on the other end, before the lady at the hire company very politely said:

“I think you’re being stitched up!!!”

and proceeded to burst out laughing…

:)

anyhoo

After the office lady asked for more details from the business owner,

(to get the right name for what they needed),

she could then ring back the same lady and get what she needed...

Now apart from a little giggle, this is quite a good lesson in communicating...

(clear your smutty thoughts at this point please :) )

To be successful in everything we do, we need to communicate clearly

It’s OUR responsibility to get it right

No one elses.

Yes, you might get frustrated at times, but here’s the reality of our frustrations:
1. Other person not listening (our problem for not getting their attention properly at the start)
2. Other person does something other than what you asked (you didn’t communicate it clearly to start with)
3. Having to repeat yourself (you didn’t check the other person’s understanding)
4. Having to raise your voice (for some reason, if all three fail, we seemingly take this option (and usually when parenting!!!?!!?))

Deep breath.

.

.

So I’m here to communicate clearly with you now, and if you’d like me to explain it in a different way, let me know, I’m here to serve you :)
1. If you’re not getting enough clients, you need to map out each step of your marketing & sales, and see what’s not working. To do this, you need to have data to back up conversations. If you don’t have data, start there. If you do, make sure you have the right data (i.e. you’ve identified the right steps). Then you’re making the right decisions. If you don’t have this in place, my 7 steps is a good place to start.
2. If you’re spending too much time inside your business, you need to identify what you repeat frequently, map out the process, and delegate it to either a TEAM member or a TECHNOLOGY tool.
3. If you’re head’s spinning with so much to do, make sure you empty your head into a to do tool that’s reliable and always accessible. Evernote is my tool of choice for this one. http://jamielikes.me/evernote
4. If you’re not sure where to start, then re-review my 7 steps, which will help you pick a starting point: Jamie’s 7 Steps http://jamielikes.me/7steps
And to continue on from last week’s story, you’ll be glad to hear the super duper technology scanner thingy in my gym is officially broken, and needs fixing, so my metabolic age (which went from 25 to 34), will be revisited when the tech is working ;)

Enjoy the rest of your Friday!

p.s.

To give you a bit more insight into the 90 minute vibrator session I had:

With this same guy:

6 months ago we’d had a similar session, but most of his marketing was based around ‘thinks and feelings’

“I think it’s this…”

“I feel that’s right for these reasons…”

And one of the main jobs i gave him last time was to turn this thinks and feelings into data, and (out of many things we setup) was to ask every person that contacts his business: “what made you get in touch with us today?”

And now 6 months later, he has data.

Which is awesome.

I was a little surprised by the results

But you can’t feel your way around data, so on we went:

We could see out of the 10 different potential marketing channels - 4 of them brought in about 90% of his business, and so we spent our time mapping out structured projects for these core 4.

He’s now got projects for the next 90 days which will cement** his marketing efforts, move most of the tasks into process based tasks, so they’ll get taken care of, with very little extra brain power being needed

Here’s a few examples of what he’ll be doing:
1. Setting up google adwords (we set this up for him, and we’re handing his team how to training so they can manage this themselves)
2. Case study blogging process (we mapped out how this can fit into his normal day to day project delivery with very little extra overhead for any of his staff)
3. Make sure google webmaster is configured properly (this is now done)
4. Setup a key referral person programme (he gets 70% of his referrals from a small number of people, so recognise and reward those people for that)
5. Birthday strategy - this works great for most services business - send a birthday card to past clients forever, and you’ll continue to be front of mind (another client took it a step further and puts a lottery ticket in each one, which adds an extra level of stickiness factor to it - it works really, really well!!)
6. Stop spending time/focus/money on the lowest performers (from the 10 channels)

And the beauty about these - once they’re setup, the business owner doesn’t need to get involved any more!!!

You can do the same too -

you just need to get the data,

then get a plan,

and you’re good to go!

“what story do you need to tell?”

hey

I hope your Friday’s going well so far??

It’s been quite an eventful week this week my side -

three highlights to share would be:
1. I got the results of ‘how old I am’ (remember last week’s anti ageing wife??, well now it’s my turn, and it wasn’t what i was expecting…)

2. a couple of ‘clicks' in another direction opened a massive amount of value for one of my clients (this will make sense in a bit), and

3. how a stressed lady was asking for the wrong help with her marketing (in a big way), and how I calmed her down…

And as I type this,

I realise all three of those are stories all by themselves, and it’ll take too long to do all three justice in one message,...

...so we know what the next couple of Friday Thoughts will be about!!! 😃

Let’s start with the last one first…

…mainly:
a. because i’m still upset with the age one (and I’ve got time to fix it before you hear about it! 😃 ), and
b. the second one will likely give even better results too with a little more time…

…and so let me share a phone call I just had this morning:

the interesting, or surprising bit, is: she rang me

now, whilst in this modern day of being connected, that might not sound like a biggie,

but the important bit to know is this:

I don’t give my number out to people unless they’re booked into my diary

AND

it was the "mother-in-law bat phone" that rang

(aka our landline - my lovely mother-in-law is the only one who rings us on our landline!)

so to get quite a highly strung lady phoning me on my landline (who isn’t my M.I.L.), asking for help, was a tad different way to start my Friday…

“can you help me?"

"have i got the right number?"

" I just need someone to help me!!!?”

...was the way the apparent one-way conversation started…

…i think i’d said hello somewhere in between… 😃

and once i’d gotten a word in

and worked out:
- she wasn’t looking for the antique shop (a company that was the old owner of our landline number),
- something else random (take away chicken anyone??),
- and she was actually after “coaching help”, I started asking questions:

“what do you need help with?” I asked curiously...

(considering i could have said "how did you get this number??!", but that came later...)

“I want someone to write me an ad, so I can explain to people why they should pay more to come to me, than my competitor”

ok I thought, I can help you…

…but then she quickly followed with:

“and i’ve spoken to other coaches and marketing companies, who say i need to start from scratch, rebuild everything I’ve done, and they want to charge me five hundred to a thousand a month to help fix it, and keep helping me get this right, and i’m only a small business and i don’t have much money to spend on this!!!”

alrighty…

...a challenge - and i haven't had my second coffee of my day yet...

and yes,

the callus among you may have said “sorry, wrong number” and hung up at that point

but not me,

no, no, no, my Friday friend,

that’s not my style

I’m (un)fortunately wired to help anyone I talk to - and so bravely, onwards we went...

and i’ll save you the full depth of the conversation

(because i know you’ll have things to do today!),

but there are some really important points that came out of the 30-minute chat - and it was about two main things:
1. her understanding
2. her competition

Here’s the bulleted version:
- she wanted people who didn’t know her, to pay her $450 for 3 months of lessons (to protect the business, let's just say she's a teacher)
- this amount was more than her competitors charge by about 15%
- she just wanted a small ad written to go in the newspaper, to make that happen
- quick check on her competitors showed they’re paying for google ads, so when her product is googled, she’s #3 in the list
- her competitors' websites told a better story
- so in the online space she losing

I explained the know/like/trust process, where with more trust you build, the more someone will spend with you

But she didn't get it

Explaining she had to create a journey to build trust, that would take someone to a level of wanting to spend $450 with her, versus $400 with her competitors

She just couldn’t wrap her head around that,

so I switched lanes,

and asked her: "when was the last time you paid $500 for anything?"

"a few months ago"

It was $2,500

On a horse saddle

(yeah, not my thing either, but we continued...)

I asked her to walk me through all the research she did before she paid that money - apparently, it was years of research, top of the line leather, and she quoted me all sorts of really impressive sounding stuff, that she’d learnt before making the decision (including the special cushion that was super comfortable on her behind!!)

I said: “great, so you need about 20% of that story, to help someone want to pay you $450”

she got it then

and i explained I could help her in three ways:
1. have a one on one session for 90 minutes, to get everything out of her head, which would fix her language, help her understand where she needed to put that language, and how to get more clients, or
2. she could work through the next intake of my 6-week Test Your Market programme, to fix her language, learn how to build landing pages, setup online marketing, and start to compete online (with step by step instructions, videos, templates, etc), or
3. I could refer her to someone else locally who could do it all for her

she wanted someone to do it for her,

apparently taking 90 minutes to do it all was too hard.

That's ok.

She get's what SHE needs,

and I’ve just referred her to a local provider who was highly recommended to me,

So everyone's happy...

Awesome!

And what’s the lessons here for you this Friday?

It's this:

If you want someone to pay you money for something you sell

And you want your marketing to do most of the heavy lifting for you

then you need to build the know/like/trust in your marketing to the $$ level your product or service is selling for

.

and if you’re not sure how much you have to build, think of the last time you spent the same amount of money

and think through everything you did before you parted with your own money

just so you appreciate what’s needed to make it happen

.

clear as mud?

great stuff

Good luck then!

and

if YOU need any help,

the three options I shared with her are available to you too 😃

Enjoy the rest of your Friday!

Cheers
Jamie "Expert in calming down ladies on Friday's" McKean

p.s. going back to one of the original topics - ‘a few clicks changed a client massively’

- the clicks refers to the lock on a bank vault - it’s a great analogy I’m borrowing from Matt Church - https://www.mattchurch.com/ really nice (and smart guy) - he taught me a small couple of changes to the way you talk about something and offer something, can be just like a couple of clicks on a vault the "right way", to unlock the vault, and get what's inside...

and i’ll explain the domino's of lightbulbs and outcomes that a client of mine got (and how you can use the same thought process), next Friday...

p.p.s. I found out she got my number by googling for help herself, and apparently the website i setup over 6 years ago, and haven't done a massive amount with since (that tell's people about my local business coaching) is still #1 on google.

Lesson there is do something right the first time, and the results can keep coming in for you over the years...
