Story
Introduction
Do not let the law degree mislead you. I am a writer, not a lawyer. As such, I am fascinated by most everything the world has to offer. Examining the best and worst of humanity is my thing. To that end, I enjoy politics, history, theology, philosophy, science fiction, music with actual words and melody, books thicker than your watchband, the more cynical philosophers (mankind is marching proudly towards self-destruction, don’t you know), World War II, panelology, philosemitism, linguistics, bioethics, the American Civil War, ancient Rome, the meaning of love, the meaning of life….the list is endless. What am I doing with all this? Writing the great American novel, drafting the best screenplay since Citizen Kane, pumping out short stories like O. Henry never dreamed of doing, snapping photographs of people and places so they are forever frozen in time, critiquing science fiction of all sorts, watching the world slide past the point of rescue into idiocy while pointing out the folly of it all, wondering why I ever wanted to be a lawyer, and listening to Jimmy Buffet and the Eagles to make it all seem worthwhile. Mostly I like to sit under the palmetto trees in a cool ocean breeze and think about opportunities gained and lost.

I received a pleasant surprise today. In the late morning, my friend Christie—Christie of Christmas cheer, not of occupational therapy—contacted me. She had her grandchildren for the day and wanted to know if I would like to ...

One measly pound. All I have managed to gain in the last month is one measly pound. After all the pizza, burgers, donuts, and assorted cookies and candy bars, I only managed to add a pound. Sure, I weigh in at the seco...

With apologies to Kurt Vonnegut. My long holiday weekend began early when Christy, my occupational therapist, surprised me with several bags of sugary goodness. On the one hand, she wants to fatten me up. On the other, ...

I was talking to a friend over lunch Friday about his interest in genealogy. He has traced his family history back to the mid-19th century. Knowing my interest in history leans more towards the big picture, he asked this intr...
