A great +Oregon Wine to enjoy while cruising the Snake River.

#Chardonnay   #ORwine   #SnakeRiver
You know I love Chardonnay with oak. So while I've been a guest host on this wine-focused Un-Cruise, I was pleased to discover a wine featured on the ship's list: 2012 Brick House Chardonnay "Cascadia" from the Ribbon Ridge region of Oregon's Willamette Valley. ($35 on Wine-Searcher)The on-board bartender (YES!), Daniel, commented that it's a wine that could make both anti- and pro-oak factions happy. I agree completely. It has just the exact rig...

This #Chenin  could be from outer space.
I really dig these Forlorn Hope wines from California. All the ones I've had have been satisfyingly weird thrill-seekers. The latest I consumed (with pleasure) is no exception.2012 Forlorn Hope StoryThis is a California Chenin Blanc from a vineyard called...wait for it...Story. It's located in Amador County, which is way east of Napa and practically in Yosemite. This Forlorn Hope wine could also be from outer space. (Unconfirmed.)A scant twenty f...

What do you like to see on the back label of a wine? Read one I found interesting at a favorite spot in the city.

#Seattle   #CaptiolHill   #Gruner
To know me is to know I frequent Cure in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, where I've lived the past ten years. I love this spot right across from the tennis courts (that mostly serve as bike polo grounds) at Cal Anderson Park. The owners Amy and Eric are really awesome. Whenever I'm there we always riff on random notions that drink deep from the wellspring that is our Gen X sensibilities. (We need some kind of Cure Deep Thoughts Log to commemo...

Fantastic to speak with Sam Neill about Pinot Noir. (Spoiler alert: No pig was present.)  #podcast   #nzwine
A pleasure to sit down for a bit of an early morning chat with Sam Neill, Proprietor of New Zealand's Two Paddocks. We were both in McMinnville, Oregon, for the International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC, where I was an invited media guest and he was the Master of Ceremonies) and conversed in the bucolic backyard of a local B&B. Birds chirping, all that good stuff. (Note: The above photo was taken at Two Paddocks. If there was a body of water pre...

Let talk about beer. #TEXSOM
Howdy from Dallas where I'm at TEXSOM, a most excellent beverage conference with a strong wine focus. But one cannot live on wine alone.Which is why I decided to get wild with beer. Not wild like pool-party in the 105 degree heat wild. (Well, it's actually just a few people chilling and drinking beer and Margaritas. While I blog away. Le sigh.) More like wild in the manner of bacteria and yeast. Fermentation-type stuff. This all happened at an exce...

Excitement from #Etna.
Is there a more exciting wine region in the world right now than Sicily? And, within this island, anything cooler than what's happening in the area surrounding Mount Etna? No.It was a pleasure to be invited to a lunch given by Planeta, whose six wineries ring Sicily. Our special guest was Alessio Planeta and our focus was on five bottles from their Etna winery, Feudo di Mezzo.[I'd also like to mention this lunch literally whet my appetite for Sici...

On abolishing the phrase "dessert wine".
I may retire the phrase "dessert wine" on this blog. Because it compartmentalizes a wine like the Donnafugata Ben Ryé to occasions when dining out and ordering something sweet to eat at the end of the meal. Don't get me wrong, I love dessert and have nothing but respect for pastry chefs. (I actually did an internship at Chicago's Blackbird eons ago and came very close to pursuing pastry full-time. But I chose love over career. That's a story for ...

Is it time for brunch yet?

#cider
I know Sunday's a few days off but I'm already thinking about brunch. Why? Because of this cider from Domaine de la Minotière in Normandy. (Or rather, cidre.) It was part of a small cache of French cider sent to me as samples by Winesellers, Ltd. (Thanks!)Domaine de la Minotière Cidre Fermier Bio DouxWhat makes it brunch-tastic? Cider is underrated as a beverage to pair with a wide variety of foods. I'm especially keen on sampling the Domaine de ...

How to drink red #wine in the summertime without melting.
When you get the opportunity to hang out with one of Seattle's most well-known wine connoisseurs, well, you know you're in for a treat.  Recently Jameson Fink and I went to the lovely Le Caviste to catch up. I've met Jameson before when he was with The Bottlehouse in Madrona but it had been awhile since we've seen each other. It was great fun hearing about the new adventures in his life as well as his thoughts on the most exciting wi...

How do you like your Cab?
Seems like a pretty basic question, huh? An iconic and omnipresent red wine grape like Cabernet Sauvignon should be pretty easy to identify taste-wise.Yet both winemaker and wine drinker have a wide variety of ideas on what Cabernet Sauvignon should give you in the glass and in your drinking hole. Taste is subjective, after all. So let me insert "I think" between the "what" and the "should".Well, that's really presumptuous to make myself the arbi...
