"The idea of real names being the thing that leads you — that’s not actually what leads us in the physical space. We lead with our bodies. We adjust how we present our bodies by situation. We dress differently, we sit differently, we emote differently. The thing about having everything linked to this universal identifier as though that’s real is just not real. That’s not how this works."
danah boyd’s SXSW keynote is sold out. When it’s over, a dozen fans rush the stage. These fans aren’t young groupies hoping to get a closer glimpse at their favorite rock star, but...

"We covet diamonds in America for a simple reason: the company that stands to profit from diamond sales decided that we should. De Beers’ marketing campaign single handedly made diamond rings the measure of one’s success in America. Despite its complete lack of inherent value, the company manufactured an image of diamonds as a status symbol."

Love this article on a high school teacher's warning to college educators. Let's give more HS teachers a voice to reform the system they know best:

"If you, as a higher education professional, are concerned about the quality of students arriving at your institution, you have a responsibility to step up and speak out. You need to inform those creating the policies about the damage they are doing to our young people, and how they are undermining those institutions in which you labor to make a difference in the minds and the lives of the young people you teach as well as in the fields in which you do your research."

I like the sound of French pop songs anyway, but this video is really remarkable. It's video retouching done in real time (well - rendered for the video, no tools can actually do this), but it makes one question the images we consume so often.

My condolences to all those hurt, injured, or just scared by the events at the Boston Marathon.

Here's one of the best articles I've seen asking for a good response, by Bruce Schneier, posting in The Atlantic:

"When we react from fear, when we change our laws and policies to make our country less open, the terrorists succeed, even if their attacks fail. But when we refuse to be terrorized, when we're indomitable in the face of terror, the terrorists fail, even if their attacks succeed."

Needed a watch battery replaced. Would rather pay a professional than attempt breaking something myself. They replaced the batteries, set the proper time and date for me, and I was done in about five minutes. Exactly what I needed.
