And this is why one should stay subscribed to "dead" channels, one day, the red feathered phoenix arises from the ashes.

They are rough, but, like you say, $10, and you bought them from an electronics hobby supplier - 4 to 5 thou accuracy is plenty good enough for most people in that sort of application and they are only going to be used maybe a few times a week at the most (probably a few times a month).

That said, I think if you bought multiple examples of these that look identical at a distance from different suppliers, you'd find quite a variety in "quality" close up, it's a shame that Sparkfun would not have put some effort into getting the "best of the worst" in this case.  I have a pair that look identical, but don't have any of the nasty cut you to ribbons burring that yours do.

It's not an uncommon arrangement, multiple busses if you want to use them like that, or link across for a single.

More annoying problem is that the bars are quite easy to push out when inserting a thicker pin, a solid back would help.

+mojochan The main issue here is that it was not marked on the top.  I've had a look at some older breadboards and the busses are divided, but marked as so with broken lines.

Can't tell from the video but possibly they are high UV leds as in nail dryers (and PCB exposers) 395-405nm or so, not going to do anything to kill stuff, but the chinese manufacturers wouldn't care/know, it's still UV.

They're very bright for the current from a 100nF cap.  If they were even remotely near the UV spectrum they'd be a lot dimmer looking.  The box doesn't make any suggestion of UV sterilisation other than having "UV" printed on it.  And that could mean UV reactive pink plastic.  (it does glow in UV)

60 above ambient is too hot for my liking, around here in summer that could be 90 degrees.  You should try putting some thermal paste between plate and plastic and see if that makes much of a difference.

It does seem too high.  I'm not sure why they didn't use a thermal paste, unless the plastic isn't really thermally conductive or maybe the oil in the paste could cause problems with the longevity of the plastic.  Particularly with the heat.  My favoured approach is to nudge the current down with a lower value of series capacitor.  Probably somewhere in the region of 470nF to 680nF.

The white sleeves are primarily holders for the polycarbonate lenses which are press fit into them and then they are plonked on top of the leds, probably glued down.  Those lenses come in various different beam angles, although personally, I find it hard to tell the difference between any two beam angles, although the lens are noticeably different, the actual beam difference between even 5 degree and 25 degree is hard to see, well, for me.

The white lens holders were glued down over the PCB mounted LEDs.
