Hi Jim and team. I am not sure what happened today but I was given the wrong time and ended up in a different Hangout with Daniel. Nonetheless interesting. I saw your answers thanks.

But I have a question. Two of my reviews have been removed and there has been an unreal increase to my local google + pages traffic from a few thousand to 80000 - 90000. (from one day to the next) both pages. This all happened at the same time and may or may not be related.  Anybody has any ideas. It is a little concerning.

Hi Jim here are my questions for this week.

1) My first questions is about the value of local SEO  and Hangouts in relation to local ranking. There can be no doubt about the  effect hangouts have on organic ranking but what about local ranking? I intend to start to use hangouts for our local business teaching English online once a week. What local factors might Google take into account if any when hosting a local Hangout? Might it for example track IP addresses of users or the host? So if I have people watching from China (as an example) this might devalue the reliance on a local level. Last, is there a way to only have people lets say from Hannover watch i.e. localise the Hangout?

2) My second question is about transcribing and translating subtitles in youtube videos. Do you think there is a real SEO value in transcribing youtube videos. The speech recognition youtube uses is really quite appalling for subtitles. Do you have any experience with this? As we have 80 videos this would be quite a lot of work especially if we translate them as well (into German)

3) My third question is a technical one about hangouts. I have the lower third (toolbox) enabled but for some reason the writing does not render properly and the writing looks awful.  Any suggestions?

Qustions 1: Hi Jim, We currently have two websites which both rank fairly well with identical keywords for our local business (don't ask). Nonetheless I am fairly sure that we are breaking google guidelines and would now like to merge these two sites. What would be best practice? 301 redirects to relevant pages? Might it better to just get rid of the second website rather than merging it. The website I want to merge is over 8 years old and was replaced with our new website. There is a possibility that it has some not entirely kosher links pointing to it.

Question 2: There have been a lot of changes in the way google approaches local business over the past 6 months and possibly also where it takes its local signals from. One of the changes is the ability to post reviews from your business page. I have recently posted a review including pictures from our business page for our VW dealer who was ranked 6th in the local listings. One day later this dealer was ranked 1 with the keywords 'VW Hannover' I checked this on different devices and was not logged into google. What do you know about the value of giving and receiving reviews from local businesses pages? I have my own theories but would be very interested in your views.

I have been looking for an article about this very issue for some time. I suspected that writing reviews for local businesses could have local SEO value. In addition of course it gives your business exposure. We lease a car from a VW dealer and I suspect that there are quite a few people searching for that and reading our review. I note of caution though. I would refrain from writing bad reviews from your business page. Just a feeling thing. It doesn't have to be a 5 star review but you don't want to anger businesses you are working with. Attaching photos with the review is something I had not thought about. Thank you for your report. One last thing has anyone got evidence that writing reviews helps your local listing?
