The Health Benefits of Bananas

Follow +Healthy and Diet Area

Bananas are sweet, yellow tropical fruits that find their way into our everyday diet because of their sweet taste, great nutritional value and their richness in potassium. Even though bananas are high in calories, their health benefits cannot be ignored. Bananas are used fresh, in smoothies and milkshakes, in pies, ice creams, sweets, chocolates, fruit salads and much more.

100 grams of banana contains 90 calories plus great amounts of minerals, vitamins, antioxidants etc. Its flesh is soft and creamy and contains simple sugars such as sucrose and fructose that are easily digested. Bananas are therefore commonly used by athletes because they provide healthy energy. The amount of dietary fiber consisted in 100 grams of fresh banana is around 7% of the recommended daily dose. Banana is well-known for its constipation relief properties.

Bananas are a rich source of potassium, containing around 358 mg potassium per 100 grams. Potassium is essential component of body and cell fluids, helping control blood pressure and heart rate. There are many vitamins present in a banana: vitamin C, that helps the body resist infections and harmful free radicals; vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) that is beneficial for the nervous system, for anemia and neuritis treatment and helps decrease the homocystine level which is one of the causes of stokes.

Bananas contain antioxidants such as zea xantin, alpha and beta carotene and lutein in smaller amounts. These components help eradicate the free radicals from the body and keep it healthy and protected. Bananas contain minerals such as manganese, a co-factor for the creation of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase; magnesium for strong bone structure and heart protection and copper, essential in the production of red blood cells.

When fully ripened, bananas are soft and prone to decay. They are harvested while still green, because they tend to ripen when harvested and transportation is easier like that. A nice, ripe banana is bright yellow with a rich aroma and creamy taste. The peel is removed easily. Avoid mushy and very ripe bananas as they are not as tasty as the good ones and tend to blacken and lose their appeal.

The nutritive value for 100 grams of banana is as follows:
