There was a magic time for NYC nightlife in the early augths, before the bottle-service model caught on and the mega clubs changed the price of entry from a fitting amount of swank to the right color credit card. I got a glimpse of that magic again in the basement here, through a curtain of fog, on the dance floor as the DJ spun obscure disco and the hip-as-hell crowd swayed to the beat.

Is the city's best cocktail bar in Williamsburg? That's really a tough one, but Hotel Delmano (which is not an actual hotel) is certainly a contender for the top title. They do all of the great pre-prohibition era mixology without too much pretentious silliness, and the drinks are more affordable than their Manhattan counterparts. It does get crowded - last time I went they stuffed me in a corner table next to a heat pipe, but once the drinks started coming the magic set in and that pipe and I became the best of friends. A must-try option for anyone into cocktail culture.

This cocktail bar is located in the SoHo space adjacent to Public and you really can't go wrong. It's intimate enough when you're trying to romance someone, the drinks are frankly awesome (and change each day) and the bar snacks are healthier than average. Whenever I'm planning to meet someone for drinks, this is always one of the first places that comes to mind, and no one I've taken there has ever walked away disappointed.

This Alphabet City bar has an absurdly cheap happy hour that lasts until at least 8 PM nightly - when I was paying $3 each for 20 ounce pints of beer (and they have a great selection) I felt like I was doing something wrong. It's definitely a neighborhood gem, even when the deals aren't in effect, and it's usually lightly populated meaning you can score one of those sweet booths and have plenty of space to chill.

An unfailingly solid option amid a sea of douchebaggery in the Meatpacking District. The sexy, subterranean space has some cool nooks where you can camp out, though the service staff seemingly forgot about our party on a recent visit. The cocktails aren't mind blowing but the do a fine job and the bar snacks also do the job. The only unpleasant time to come is when the room is packed - but if that's the case just walk out and head to one of the other bazillion watering holes on these cobblestone streets.

Sasha Petraske's new cocktail bar is pretty much the only game around in Murray Hill if you are looking for a serious drink. While it's great to have an option for a proper tipple, the seating area on the second floor of this bi-level space fills up fast. Those who want to wait for a table are corralled into a downstairs area that's standing room only - are bar stools suddenly out of fashion? Look beyond the small cocktail list - these bartenders are no joke and you're better off telling them what spirit you like and putting the choice into their hands.

It's a bit tired after so many years perched alongside Union Square, but you could do worse (actually, a lot worse, witness Coffee Shop across the street). The best time to go is during Brunch, there is a jazz band in the basement that keeps things lively. The menu may be a bit of a snooze but the seafood-centric options feature many crowd pleasers. Sit on the patio when it's warm - there aren't may cars on that side street so you'll be able to take in more people watching and less exhaust fumes .
