An excellent essay. This addresses some of the same arguments I've heard time and again, especially when critics tell me that the two black belts I earned in traditional Taekwondo are somehow worthless. Would I lose in a sport fight against a somebody who grapples? Probably - I haven't trained extensively in grappling, so if the rules of the fight limit my avenues of attack to elbow, knee, and closed-hand blows to the head, torso, and upper legs, then I'm out of that running. But if there are no rules, and I'm allowed to use any combination of closed and open hands, elbows, knees, and feet to any location on the body including eyes, ears, throat, neck, joints, and groin, well - I'd say my chances just got better. Sport fighting depends on following the rules of the fight, but if my life is in danger I'm going to use anything my instructor taught me - rules be damned.
