I want to shake up journalism, lend a voice to the silenced and be a platform for the invisible... because I know what it's like to read a publication and not see my reality reflected back to me.

On February 17th, 2015, my life changed. This introvert from Indianapolis, Indiana, with a small voice and big dreams received clearance to intern for a dream company: USA TODAY.  As some of you may know, I've been freelancing for USA TODAY for a year now. In addition to that, I've also held thr...

"Enclosed in that competitive spirit was a heart as big as this dome — a heart that couldn’t quit giving, a heart that could never quit helping."

I'm just curious as to why victims are always expected to modify their behavior in hopes of deflecting abuse from a society that devalues them anyway. Why are we not working to change our cultural ethos?...

The systematic iteration of the word "thug" in reference to black bodies is problematic because it perpetuates white supremacist ideologies about black people, namely that we are pathological, violent and lawless....

There are few words more insidious to me than theword “thug.” It’s a dog-whistle, a code word –“nigger” in socially acceptableclothing. I say this because the term “thug” –which was originally a...

Introduction
I am a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies as well as minors in journalism and screenwriting.

I am the 2014-2015 president/co-campus correspondent for the UNC chapter of HerCampus.com, ranked by Forbes as one of the top 100 sites for women. I'm also a contributor for the Huffington Post's Black Voices section and USA TODAY College.

In my past life, I was a fall 2014 Collegiate Correspondent for USA TODAY; a sales and marketing intern for The New York Times + 3C Program; an arts and entertainment reporter for The Daily Tar Heel; an op-ed contributor for Bustle.com and an editorial intern for Indianapolis Monthly magazine and Collegefashionista.com.

I immerse myself in all things editorial. I am constantly gobbling up news, brainstorming pitches and writing. In the bit of free time I have, I enjoy spoken word poetry, binge-watching Law & Order: SVU and scarfing down Chinese food.
