Home prices continued to push higher in October fueled by several factors that include a strengthening economy, an acute lack of supply and low home loan rates. Data analytics firm CoreLogic reports that home prices, including distressed sales, surged 7 percent from October 2016 to October 2017 and were up 0.9 percent month-over-month from September to October. Looking ahead, CoreLogic sees a slowing in prices; expectations are for a rise of 4.2 percent from October 2017 to October 2018.

Honoring Our Nation's Heroes
National Veterans Day

On November 11, we will observe Veterans Day to honor American veterans. These individuals have shown their patriotism and willingness to sacrifice time, personal comfort, and sometimes their very lives in order to protect their fellow citizens and ensure the continuing freedom we enjoy each day.

The most renowned Veterans Day ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery, where a military color guard lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in honor of all veterans, past and present. The ceremony is held on November 11 at exactly 11:00 a.m., a tradition established after the armistice of World War I, which occurred at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Each year, the Veterans Day National Committee selects other regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout the country, from parades and ceremonies to military exhibits and tributes. To learn more and find a ceremony near you, please visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website.

We pause and pay tribute to America's veterans, grateful for their service and sacrifice to protect and preserve the values of this great nation. Let's consider deeply their strength, courage and profound selflessness.

I hope this important holiday finds you and your family well.

Sincerely,

Jaime Charouf

The Labor Department reported on Friday that job growth rebounded in October. Non-farm Payrolls rose by 261,000 new jobs versus the 300,000 expected while August and September were revised higher by a total of 90,000. The weak showing in September was due in part to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma temporarily stunting job creation. Within the Jobs Report, it showed that the Unemployment Rate fell to 4.1 percent, the lowest since 2006. Total unemployed, or the U6 number, fell to 7.9 percent, also the lowest since 2006. Average hourly earnings were flat after September saw a 0.5 percent increase.

Overall, the report was positive for the labor markets heading into the holiday shopping season. More people working equals more consumer spending, which boosts the economy.

The U.S. tax code has historically promoted homeownership by offering a discount for things like the mortgage-interest deduction and local property taxes. However, the just-announced tax reform proposal in the U.S. House steps back from that position, leading to strong pushback from the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Home price gains remained solid in August due in part to low mortgage rates and an improving economy. The S&P/Case-Shiller 20-City Home Price Index rose 5.9 percent year over year, in line with estimates. David M. Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said: "Home price increases appear to be unstoppable."

On a national basis, home prices rose 6.1 percent from August 2016 to August 2017, up from 5.9 percent the previous month.
