Prophetic interview with Emir Kusturica, our favorite Serbian, a dialogue with a Russian TV girl before last Christmas when goons were occupying Kiev Parliament reclaiming being part of the Eurozone and throwing Molotov cocktails. In a few words, he thinks that Ukraine is going the way of former Yugoslavia, something his celebrated films describe with acerbic humor. It broke my heart when he mentionened Sarajevo today, 100% muslim and boring to death. This was a lively multicultural town before the Balkans wars where we (Clinton, UN troops etc) sided with the muslims and bombed Belgrade. I was there a year before they had the winter Olympics and just adored it. It's gone. Ethnic cleansing with borders and more borders. Gone is the wild and happy complicated but likeable country that was former Yugoslavia. We also sided with the theocratic Shiites against Saddam and the more evolved Sunnis and look at Iraq now!
The Ukrainian protesters don't know how the Eurozone will hurt them, and there is no better witness to that prophecy than Kusturica, a man of the world with tons of wisdom who had to use his creativity and humor to deal with the pain of a broken Yugoslavia. I am partial to Russia, it's true, mostly from heart and culture, but Ukranians have good reasons to stay the course as the german banks that will control them will be no more jolly than they are in Greece right now. Ask any tourist returning from Athens these days!!!
The last part of the interview has Kusturica echo what I think and feel, about Putin, Russia, the West, Nato....I can't tell you how relieved I am to have a quality person think exactly the way I do. The interview gets a lot better in the last third. Stay with it. This is the freest of free men and he wants to take care of cows in the future. His last statement is a blast that you will share with joy like I did.
