Is this what video games have become these days? Like slot machines that you have to keep feeding real money into for a chance to "win"? That makes me sick. #paytoplay #freetoplaygames

My attempt at an Atari 7800 retrospective. Feel free to nitpick on anything I may have gotten wrong.
Back in the late 80's, I desperately wanted an Atari 7800. I loved the Atari 2600 to death and thought that a 7800 would be three times as awesome. I remember poring over the all the video game cat...

Cool, it's like the Peel P50, only it's more likely to tip over in high winds!  #tinycar

How often do you shift gears in an automatic vehicle that you need all of those controls in the center column of your steering wheel? And how is that any more convenient than a floor or column shifter that you can manipulate by touch alone? Was this an unnecessary gimmick or did they actually think that would revolutionize the automotive industry?

They were trying to copy Chrysler corporations push button drive.  Their controls were to the left of the steering wheel.  The "good" thing about the Edsel was that it had a P (Park) button, while the Chrysler's didn't.

I know this is probably old news by now, but wow! The bidding is up to $100,000 right now and there's still 5 days to go. If I had a few hundred grand to spare, I'd put in a bid, maybe.

I spend a weekend with some Atari 7800 games, and learn that nostalgia, while a good thing in small doses, is not something you can base your entire life (or entire game console) on. Also, Grampa Munster is awesome.

Good write-up on the 7800. I still have mine today, and while I have lots of 2600 games, I think I only have about 5 7800 games. The 7800 port of Xevious is really good though, and it actually has decent music and sound effects, I would not have thought it had the old 2600 sound chip in there.
