Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I feel the very much the same way you do, even though I haven't directly worked with a client that's used their services yet. Let's hope none of them will.

I've got a potential client that is looking for a 6 month engagement. They're in the Ecommerce space. Fairly low budget. Looking for consulting and perhaps some help with the implementation. Message me if interested.

Is there any way to tell if a listing's been hit by a "Local" penalty? A client of mine is ranking really well organically, but not in the pack. They used to, not anymore. In fact, when I go into the Map results, they are no where to be found. No dupe issue or anything like that. What cues should I be looking for? Thanks in advance for your help.

Jim, one of the reasons for not including BOTW in particular is because, as Darren mentioned, it was paid-only for some time. They just reinstated the free option recently. Even though they have this free option, newly added free listings rarely get approved, and I am yet to see updates to such listings actually go live. However, this is not the main reason. BOTW has consistently been appearing very rarely in my citation audits and researches, so I believe their database of businesses is relatively insignificant. Additionally, they stand pretty low in the overall ecosystem, i.e. not many sites source information from them, and I believe they do not source information from many places, either (hence their relatively smaller database size).

Regarding the other sites you mentioned, I wouldn't necessarily call them "Yext's stable". A number of citation sources in the list are part of Yext's network, though. I believe about 50%. This means that Yext could help get accurate listings on about 50% of the most important citation sources for the US. However, you would still need to supplement significant manual effort - work on the rest of the sites + work on cleaning up duplicate listings. As I have mentioned in the past, Yext could help in some cases, for instance when the company is very new and it has no (or almost no) online footprint.

If I do a search for "furnace repair toronto" and my client is located in the GTA, but outside Toronto, and the top right hand corner map does not show his office area, is there no chance for me to rank in the top spots? This is to add on to the discussion I started earlier here about 905 and 416 (https://plus.google.com/u/0/102450591677203177780/posts/f7sys3Ymawy). I have a feeling that before he's got a 905 and is outside Toronto, ranking for Toronto keywords will be very very difficult. Is that true? Thanks in advance for you help.

For any of you dealing with "disconnected listings", here's a case study I wrote up detailing the process I took to get one of my clients out of this rubble. Please share your story if you've experienced anything similar / different :)
It’s not a walk in the park trying to figure out why your client’s Google Listing all of a sudden disappeared from the local search results while their organic rankings maintained good standing for a long period of time. I had some trouble figuring this one out, …

So... how much data does Facebook have of us?

"When the data is the social graph of 500 million people, there are a lot of lenses through which you can view it. One that piqued my curiosity was the locality of friendship. I was interested in seeing how geography and political borders affected where people lived relative to their friends. I wanted a visualization that would show which cities had a lot of friendships between them."
Visualizing data is like photography. Instead of starting with a blank canvas, you manipulate the lens used to present the data from a certain angle. When the data is the social graph of 500 million people, there are a lot of lenses through which you can view it. One that piqued my curiosity was ...

Trying to update your client's business information on YPG in Canada? Well, you're likely going to need to jump through a hoop before you can get that listing updated. I talk about that in this post here.
There’s nothing worse than correcting your business information on a directory and waiting for it to update. It’s even more painful when you have to update even the most obvious mistakes like a spelling error in the Business Name or an Address that was mistakenly recorded. So yeah, …

This may be a silly question to ask, but one that I've pondered about and there probably isn't a concrete answer for. Is there a "schedule" of local result updates? For instance, have you noticed for your clients after working with them for a few weeks / months that usually every two weeks you would notice changes in your target keyword SERP? In the past, I've gotten a website rank organically (not map results) fairly quickly just by modifying their title tag and on-page (i.e. 24 hours I saw changes).

+Max Minzer - that study you shared by BrightLocal is exactly what I was looking for. Wasn't expecting someone to give an absolute answer, but this will work! The other two resources by +Phil Rozek are great too and believe I came across them before. Will read through them again. Thanks.

If a business has, lets say two primary phone numbers in a single city (i.e. Toronto = 905 and 416), will listing both numbers in directories have a negative effect on rankings? Could having two local phone numbers cause confusion with Google? What would be the best approach if they already have a number of citations that list out both numbers (and on the website)? Thanks in advance for the help.

I am also interested in seeing what happens. I know I would be risk averse with a client and just put one number in.

It surprised me how many authentic Chinese dishes they had on their menu. Located in Orleans, my folks won't need to make the long commute into Chinatown to have the types of dishes you'd find there. We were there with a group of 10 around Christmas. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends and family.

Thanks to Kevin and his team at Capital Home Comforts for installing my air conditioner this summer. Was looking for an HVAC company around Ottawa to help me out with my installation, and after speaking to Kevin on the phone I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Very professional, knowledgeable, polite and offered exceptional service. Would definitely recommend to my friends and family.

Probably the best Gelato I've ever had. If you're big fan of mango, try their mango gelato it won't disappoint. Went there on a Thursday evening and it was quite busy so make sure you snatched a spot while there is one available.

My friends and I went for the 2 for 1 Fish n' Chips. Overall, the experience was OK. The fish batter was actually kind of chewy (you don't usually expect that for fish batter). We also had a bowl of their mussels, and they were mediocre also.

Sushi was good, but the service was terrible. We were a group of 10 and the staff were rude right from the get go. My girlfriend opted to order a la carte, while the rest of us were going to go with the all you can eat. She reminded her more than once that she can't eat any of the all you can eat sushi. The tone she used was just uncalled for. Not only that, but she came back to check on her every few minutes - it was disturbing. Their staff needs to be trained better at dealing with this.

I head over to Kanata Noodle House for a bowl of pho/bun during work hours because it's literally 2 minutes from my office. The staff there is very welcoming and the service there is great. The food is very good too (I prefer the bun there more). Their spring rolls are jam packed with meat, so be sure to try some if you go!

My girlfriend and I ordered the Maritime Platter to share and from a food stand-point, it was terrible (glad we had a Groupon deal). Items on that platter were either too chewy or too salty. Bread was served cold to begin with. Knowing that we would be using our fingers, there was no bucket for our shells and no wet naps to wipe our hands after we were done. The server was helpful and nice. It's a shame she had hard products to sell to her customers. Would I recommend this restaurant to my friends - no.
