'St. Nicholas Day is traditionally celebrated on Dec. 6, but Moore’s poem set his visit on Christmas Eve, informally tying St. Nicholas to the holiday.'

Christmas before Christ

"And they lived like gods without sorrow of heart, remote and free from toil and grief: miserable age rested not on them; but with legs and arms never failing they made merry with feasting beyond the reach of all evils."

thoughts:
A common theme across many cultures is the legend of an age which existed in the distant past where men were good and there was peace on Earth. A golden age which eventually became corrupted leaving mankind in a sorry state of affairs which continues to this day. Deep inside we long to return to this legendary pure, unspoiled time of man. Christmas is the descendant of holidays which paid tribute to this good age and attempted to recreate it for a least a few days out of the year. Although the original reason for the celebration has been forgotten, the spirit of peace on Earth, goodwill toward men has somehow continued in a remarkably pure way which we now call 'The Christmas Spirit'. In remembering this golden age, we keep alive the chance that someday we can bring about it's return.
Ancient or modern, we all celebrate the year's end and the dwindling day light with solstice celebrations and festivals of light.

We were searching the flower district in downtown LA for a florist for our wedding but couldn’t find one we felt comfortable with until we stumbled upon Lucky Bamboo. My fiance was struck by a pink rose centerpiece and after a short time speaking with Sung we knew we had found our florist. Sung helped us to figure out what we needed and offered us fair prices. She loaned us pedestals for the altar arrangements which she suggested we move to the sweetheart table after the ceremony. We had to change our wedding date and she was very responsible in calling us to check-in to make sure everything was on track. On our wedding day the flowers were beautiful and abundant. We would recommend Lucky Bamboo. ps- It's Lucky not Luckey

In Chicago one day alone for a meeting and wanted to try the best Chicago deep dish pizza I could. I am downtown and couldn't get out to the highest rated ones so I decided on Pizano's which I could walk to and offered individual size deep dish pizzas. I ordered the 'brickhouse', sausage and mushroom and thought it was excellent. The crust was crispy/crunchy as opposed to the soggy bread deep dishes we have in Los Angeles and I enjoyed the overall taste, especially the sausage. My only suggestion is to give that crust some more salt. As good as the texture was it needs its flavor to be brought out. I also thought the casual but old style atmosphere was perfect. I have to agree with some other reviewers though about the odd service. I sat at the bar and my server, Julie was friendly, and helpful about separating a check but most of the time she was distracted by the other employees who acted like they were having their own private party there. Had to work to get her attention away from them when I needed something. The older male 'manager' I assume, was in particular- disturbing. He spent his entire time flirting with the waitresses and even kissed one of the poor young things. In short- 4.5 star pizza and setting. 1.5 star service.

Finn's is a pretty standard casual Irish pub located in the pleasant 'Forks' area. The hamburger I ordered was good but what made my evening there really enjoyable was the bartendress on duty, Jackie. She found the college football game on the TV that I had come in to see, she recommended local beers and let me sample one before I ordered it and was all round funny and fun.

Very surprised at the poor prior reviews here. I almost wasn't going to stay there after reading them but I checked reviews on TA and they were much more positive. I found the TA reviews to be accurate. This is a beautiful hotel with large comfortable rooms in a very pleasant area of Winnipeg. It is on a river park with native plants and nice trails. Adjacent is a charming indoor food market/court with a variety of restaurants surrounding. Above all the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful,
