As a PhD in mental health, a corporate high performance leadership consultant and a part-time faculty member in Addictions and Mental Health, I'm frequently called upon to speak about how to manage stress and overwhelm in one's personal and professional life.

We all experience stress in our lives and businesses and women, especially, tend to internalize this stress leading to a litany of negative symptoms and ailments including: depression, bloating, irritability, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and more.

In this C.A.P video series I speak about the impact of stress from the perspective of women; particularly women in leadership (corporate or entrepreneur). I share some of the effects that stress has on our ability to be effective entrepreneurs and provide some tips on how to deal with stress effectively. My host is Carma Spence, Founder and CEO of Own Your Awesome in Business and Life.

To your Success!

NIKKI CLARKE RADIO SHOW INTERVIEW: I had an amazing interview with the fabulous Nikki Clarke last month. She asked thought-provoking questions about my business mission, the type of work I do, who my clients are, and how working with my clients has transformed me personally. Fantastic questions. Thank you for the opportunity Nikki and I'm really looking forward to appearing on your television show on June 29th.

THINK YOU'VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO LEAD? ASK YOURSELF THESE 10 LEADERSHIP CORE COMPETENCY QUESTIONS.

So, you’ve been asked you to take the lead on an important corporate project or better yet you’re being considered for promotion to a leadership position with additional responsibilities and a higher pay grade.

Before you hurriedly dive in head-first, stop and think for a moment. What does being in a leadership role mean to you? Do you possess the emotional and behavioral competencies it takes to be a leader? If not, how motivated are you to develop the essential core skills that effective leaders have mastered?

Asking yourself these 10 questions will help clarify if you’re ready to move into a leadership role:

1. How well do I know myself? The most effective leaders are self-aware. They’re conscious about keeping in touch with who they are and how they feel—especially during the important transition phase where new roles and responsibilities can create feelings of fear, anxiety, and self-doubt in themselves and others. Effective leaders have developed self- awareness about how their thoughts influence their emotions, decision-making, and relationships with others.
2. How well do I accept responsibility? Leaders who take personal credit when things go right but blame others (e.g, their team, customers, technical issues, the competition, etc.) when things go wrong demoralize and demotivate their team. A demotivated team results in reduced productivity and creativity and has a direct impact on the bottom line. The willingness to assume responsibility and accountability is key to gaining the respect and trust of your team.

See the entire list of 10 questions on my blog (link below) and follow my channel to get all the latest updates on women and leadership.

WHY SOME EMPLOYEES ARE TEAM AVOIDERS NOT TEAM PLAYERS: These days, job descriptions include terms like "must be a team player" or "must work well within a team environment". These aren't merely HR buzzwords. In today's highly competitive corporate environments, group projects (consisting of within-department and multi-department teams with employees at various levels of the organization ranging from admin to even the CEO) are increasingly being used to work on high-level corporate deliverables. It appears that teamwork has become an essential part of corporate life.

So what happens if you prefer to work alone rather than doing group work? Will you be rejected as a potential candidate at the interview stage, or if hired, will you be labelled as "not a corporate team player" or "having a difficult personality"? Are team players more likely to be perceived as better colleagues and employees? Are team players better for business? If so, how should good leaders manage "team avoiders"?

Good leadership means getting to the heart of why someone may be a team avoider rather than a team player. Indeed, a recent study (PsychTests) of 11,800 people showed that team avoiders have some legitimate concerns such as wanting to avoid working with difficult people, etc.
