NEW INCIDENT
2016-07-09 Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8075 from Yogyakarta to Medan, operated by an Airbus A320 (PK-AZA, chinese production, built in 2012) narrowly missed an unmanned hot air balloon, when the flight was climbing through about 18000 ft heading northwest about 70 km W of their point of origin.
According to a pilot report, the closest distance was estimated as only 10 meters (32 ft). The pilots of two Citilink flights reported seeing balloons flying at 9000 ft. and 17000 ft. that morning.
The A320 continued the flight and landed safely at its destination.
Hot air balloons were a popular wish-making tradition in many asian countries as part of spiritual solemnities. They normally measure 5 m in diameter and can be up to 10 m tall. Filled with hot air such a balloon can reach up to 35000 ft. and be airborne for many hours.
