Who's to blame for the shame that is Louisiana's ridiculously out-of-whack state budget. Here's a hint: pick up a mirror.
Blame any one, any group or any thing you like. The reality is the blame rests with us.

After a week of fishing, summer lacrosse and semi-relaxation I return to this Shakespearean mess of a state government...
It's official: Washington-style politics has arrived — and is thriving — in Louisiana. You know, that brand of idiotic lawmaking where bombastic sounds and fury prattle about the halls and chambers of the state Capitol, signifying nothing — and ultimately accomplishing...

For a country born out of protest, we sure have a difficult time dealing with dissent. One day we admire those peacefully standing up for their beliefs; the next we're scorning those who dare buck the status quo. Our respect or disdain usually hinges on whether we agree with those doing the protesting.
The case of Andrew Jones, the Amite High valedictorian barred from graduating with his class May 18 for refusing to shave his goatee, has drawn heavy public comment.

I have zero sympathy for those on death row, but this nearly three-year legal fight is not worth the financial cost. It's time to stop spending millions upon millions of taxpayers dollars to fight a solution that likely costs less than $100,000.
The state needs to drop its nearly three-year legal fight on a lawsuit regarding dangerous — and unconstitutional — heat and humidity levels on Angola's death row and install some air conditioners.

I get jokes and satire as much as the next person, but state Rep. Kenny Havard joking about the ideal stripper while discussing a bill intended to curb human trafficking was just, plain stupid.
A thought came to mind watching state Rep. Kenny Havard try to turn a bill to combat human trafficking into a referendum on the physical assets of your quintessential stripper: Louisiana really needs a law banning stupid from its state...

Perhaps the final epitaph of Bobby Jindal's POTUS run is being declared "the biggest loser" by The Huffington Post...
Donald Trump, the experts told us, was that say-anything, crazy uncle bit player added to the cast to provide some comic relief from all the gravitas of this Aaron Sorkin-esque drama. America — at least red America — didn't want "The West Wing." It wanted "Veep."

Offering some "compromise" name suggestions for Baton Rouge's soon-to-open magnet high school. Any work for you? If not, what are your suggestions?
East Baton Rouge Parish School Board members will meet Thursday night (June 16) to close the book on the brouhaha that is the Lee High name debate.

This one of those "ya' gotsta' read it to believe it" situations. Word of warning: Violence is running amok with your childrens' Lego sets.
In what clearly is a sign some of us have way too much time on our hands, five — count 'em five — university researchers have uncovered this shocking truth: Lego sets are becoming increasingly "more violent." Let's all pause...

Not sure what's more surprising: a 4.0 GPA valedictorian from Amite High being barred from graduation ceremonies due to his sporting a goatee or the existence of something called the American Mustache Institute?
If there is such a thing as the perfect high school student, Andrew Jones, a graduating senior at Amite High, would appear to be that person: 4.0 grade-point average, three-sport star athlete (track, football and basketball) and valedictorian of his...

BREC owes it to taxpaying voters to announce its location plans for a reimagined Baton Rouge Zoo. Heck, the Allied forces planned and executed the D-Day invasion in less time.
No matter how hard BREC officials try, it seems the parks and recreation department just won't be able to decide whether or not to relocate the Baton Rouge Zoo until well after the November election. Wait ... what ... seriously? That's...

More and more people are embracing personal fiscal responsibility — either by choice or necessity — and that's not doing the U.S. or Louisiana economies any favors. Have your spending habits changed since the Great Recession?
We have met the enemy of the American economy ... and it is us — the consumer. Ditto for right here in Louisiana. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we're not spending enough of our hard-earned...

Nothing is official, but look for Gov. John Bel Edwards to propose income tax changes that will result in higher taxes for those earning more than $120k — if recent tax studies are any indication.
It's almost official: Increasing income taxes, or at least changing tax rates, so more money flows into the state's coffers will be the headline solution put forward by Gov. John Bel Edwards during a planned June special session to close whatever...
