So true. Can't we all just get along?
There are good and bad ways to make a point

I'm happy to read +Sarah Sharp's post on the main Linux mailing list. I share her concern that violent undertones aren't necessary in the software industry.

Such language doesn't help. It's damaging. There is no need to make people feel threatened in the process of reporting a bug, of requesting a feature, of reviewing a change, of announcing a release, or at any other point of the software development process.

In my personal experience, the effects of hostile language are cumulative, with short-term and long-term damage. I'm very familiar with both kinds myself.

The biggest damage, though, is that it creates a poisonous atmosphere, and such an atmosphere doesn't stay confined to a single place. It ends up spreading around, contaminating a lot of people. It might only make people inside the software industry feel sick, but the poison is so noxious that it keeps outsiders away.

That is disastrous for our industry. Software engineering is a critically understaffed discipline. We are struggling to find enough people to do all the software work that needs to get done, and many tasks end up having to be dropped for lack of qualified engineers.

As software engineers, the dumbest thing we can do is creating and maintaining a hostile environment. When someone looks from the outside at the interactions between software engineers and they see the language of physical violence or other kinds of verbal abuse, they're not likely to get attracted in, they'll stay outside, and we lose a software engineer.

Software engineering is an analytical discipline. There's no need for emotions. Emotions get in the way of credibility. When we tone down the emotions and focus on the facts, we communicate much better and make more progress faster.

So, let's stay focused on making progress, not on trying to hurt one another. Thanks Sarah for the reminder.
