BIM is an acronym for “Building Information Management”. It is as much about “Building” as it is “Information” and “Management”. It is not just about walls and doors. It can store, extract and parse any data set including historical expenses and profit, projected expenses and profit, age, vendor, and maintenance schedules of anything – in, around, or related to your building.

When used to explore different building envelope and equipment scenarios, the energy modeling process enables early decisions in the design process, balancing aesthetics with building life cycle costs.

As mentioned in part 1 from April 4th, we had the opportunity to attend a few career fairs last month. The first being Penn State’s career day, hosted by the Stuckeman school of Architecture, which was talked about in part 1. The second event was Philadelphia University’s Design Expo, which consisted of students enrolled in interior design, landscape architecture, sustainable design, industrial design, and similar majors in addition to those in their architecture program.

Working in a design field can be very stressful at times. Sometimes it’s the never-ending project that you have been staring at for years, but always seems to be behind schedule on. Other times it’s the feast or fathom analogy where you were just given more projects than you can count on one hand with parallel deadlines. No matter how the situation was created, the same feeling of drowning in work seems to creep into your psyche. There are times when you just need to put your head down and drive through the pile of work, but there are often ways to help prevent this, or certainly assist in easing the process.

John Lister, AIA, LEED AP, of JL Architects has earned his Green Globes professional certification. Green Globes professionals play an important role in fostering O&M practices that result in more energy-efficient, healthier and environmentally sustainable buildings. Property owners of a LEED or a Green Globes certified building are finding the increased marketability, the reduced operating costs, the possible tax benefits, and possible loan reduction through programs such as the Fannie Mae multi-family Green Building Certification Financing to be a positive investment choice & a positive choice when it comes to the environment.

As a LEED accredited professional for the past 10 years I have worked within the tight and narrow structure of the LEED process. As a Green Globes professional for the same 10 years, I have designed and assessed buildings using the Green Globes on-line survey system.

A classic but convoluted question. One might be inclined to ask, isn’t Revit all about Building Information Modeling (BIM)? Doesn’t this entail modeling the entire building and all of its components? The answer is yes, and no. The most important question a client, owner and architect need to establish from the beginning is how will the end user be using this model?

By identifying the source of constant airborne contaminants, you can target that specific area for air purification, making your facilities, remodels, and new construction cleaner and healthier.
