PIRATES OF MARS is now a monthly series available for purchase at Comixology starting with issue #1 on March 4th. The first 3 issues are maxi-issues covering the original LOVE & REVENGE arc. Now in FULL COLOR! All new adventures will follow as part of an ongoing series.

Written by JJ Kahrs and illustrated by Veronica Fish, PIRATES OF MARS follows the adventures of Captain Lovelace and her dysfunctional crew as they behave badly, shoot things in the face, and continue to not live up to society’s expectations of them.

The nerd classic, 40 years old this month, taught me about imagination, purpose -- and having a great adventure

For National Game Design Month I am creating a super-villain tabletop RPG called SUPERCRIMINAL INTENT. I’ve had this idea knocking around in my head and random notes for years, and this event is a good way to turn it into something that is done.

The first thing that makes SCI different from other supers games is that this isn’t about your powers or abilities. There won’t be the obligatory catalog of superpowers that usually takes up 1/3 of the book with specific rules for how each one operates. In SCI you just write what you want down in a sentence on your character sheet.

This approach is taken to solve the old Superman vs Batman problem, or in our case the Zod vs Lex Luthor problem. One has godlike power, and the other guy is a mortal man in a business suit. Yet it’s the normal (though very wealthy and very smart) human that’s considered the more dangerous of the two. Why? Because Lex is more central to the story. He’s got more impact one what happens. He has gravitas.

We represent this gravitas as a stat called Menace and you can think of it kind of like character levels. How big a menace your character is a major contributor to how effective you are. This along with the character’s Motives, Criminal Profile, and Felonies are what shape the character and allow the player to accomplish things.

And by things, I mean crime.

Finished the script for PIRATES OF MARS: GODS & MONSTERS #1. I'm allowed to play video games again. Until the deadline for #2 approaches and I freak the hell out again.

Looks wonderful. Veronica is a wonderful artist. And of course I'm just a bit biased toward the author. :)

What a completely shit thing for a company to do 2 weeks before Christmas. What makes it worse is the non-response from the CCP PR bot. So tell me CCP, either you didn't see this coming and are inept or you did and just don't care about people. Just kidding. It's clearly both.

That's horrible.  I'm sure there must be some "get it done before the end of year" business financial reasoning, but it just is terrible for the people.

Supercriminal Intent: Day 6

Motives and Felonies. Motives and Felonies are what you use to perform any action in SCI. Your Felony (Murder, Hacking, etc) is the crime you're attempting to commit, and your Motive (Madness, Malice, Greed, Pain, or Fear) is the reason behind the crime. These stats form the pool of d6 dice you roll to try and score hits.

Motive dice are a bit different. They "explode" and allow you to role again if they come up a 6. This explosion generates Heat though. Heat is unwanted attention from law enforcement, masked vigilantes, or other crooks that the GM is going to use to make your life unpleasant. Motive generated Heat represents your super-criminal's emotional damage leaking out and getting in the way of your getaway.

I've got the mechanics and character creation parts done. I may do an alpha playtest very soon. Still have to do the GM section and the big lists of loot. You're a super-criminal. You gotta have cool loot to want to steal. I'm still on the fence on whether to do a default setting or not.

For those designing an RPG for National Game Design Month, I would recommend browsing the archives of Socratic Design.

Heya, As I look down my page here at the links on the right, I’m seeing some really important articles vanish from the front page. Stuff like The Big Three and Power 19 should be kept, IMO, front and ...

Now that I've been called out by +Michael McMullan I'll go ahead and commit to NaGa DeMon. I'll be taking the collection of notes I've been making for the last several years and turning them into a Super-Villain RPG.
