Who's tried this test?
A hi-def test for your ears (and your audio equipment): Listen to these songs and see if you can tell the difference between an MP3 and an uncompressed audio file.

Update: I listened on a pair of BX5a speakers through an Apogee Duet 1st generation. Will share results once I hear back from a few of you...are you in?

A note to all who are going to the URL listed above and are scratching their head: don't forget the underscore between "free" and "hands":

greghoward.com/free_hands.

Greg, great exercise!! Thanks for sharing, Greg. Nice variations during the last portion on your way to the end, very cool.

Very, very cool. Can you tell us a little about your setup on this one? So many color options, it sounds like.

Great memories. I was at that concert. Absolutely incredible atmosphere. My favorite part remains Bob Mintzer's bass clarinet improv. right after the first song ("The Chicken"). Amazing musicality and feel. (Only downside to this post is the unbelievably nasty comments and back-and-forths below...wow.)
Merci, Henrique.

J'ai la chair de poule à écouter cette musique!! Il prenait le temps de jouer, de développer leurs idées.

This brings me back to my youth, this is some of the best progressive music my homeland had at the time (1970s). Merci, Zumazin!

This type of movement and interaction with the Stick really gets you into a mantra-like state, I find. You can just let go of any preconceived musical idea, and move about the board, looking for colors and feels. There's a lot more here than meets the eye—and ears.

Thank you for sharing, this is wonderful. Your fluidity when playing scalar passages is great. What a great way to stretch your playing on the bass side! May I suggest the pair of Menuets from that same suite? I know your musicality will shine on those as well. I'll be right here... ;-)

Brings back memories! Who else listened to these songs way back when...?

Beautiful, relaxed arrangement of this classic. Nice RH stretch to deliver the last chord! And the tone, very woody and rich, is perfect for this. Well done, Greg.

The "G-major Bass Stretch" exercise at 10:43 can be transposed to great effect: try half-a-step lower, as well as up to minor third higher, with the first note a B-flat on the 10th string, 10th fret. An exercise that keeps on giving!  Another tip: start really slow, aim for accuracy of tone and energy before cranking up the speed. It pays off, guaranteed.
