Would key escrow mean that I am forced to hand out copies of my private keys to "the authorities" by default? And would it imply that if I refuse to do that I violate the law and am criminal? That's one of the important questions. I not only use GPG to encrypt email, I mainly use it to sign mails. This allows me to check integrity, which is a very important use case. Many people confuse cryptography with encryption. Encryption is just one part of it. Hashing, signing, key exchange are other parts of it. I also use private certificates for logging in to web services (startssl for example). And what about Perfect Forward Secrecy implementations that switch keys all the time? Must I save and share all those temporary keys too? Key escrow is not even close to a solution. It's an idea from long ago, when keys were considered static and to be used long term. As we know about that risk, we currently use systems with throw-away keys. Key escrow cannot work in such a system. Would that mean we must outlaw such systems? Those are the questions we are facing in this current discussion.

The sociologist Nathan Jurgenson coined the term “digital dualism” in 2011. Digital dualism is the idea that the digital sphere is something separate from the physical sphere, that those two “spaces” are distinct and have very different rulesets and…

So weit so vorhersehbar.

That's the summary of the longer and more specific document. The actual part goes like this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/291782/Screenshots/Screenshot_2015-01-07-14%3A59%3A30.png
So it's clear that no 3rd party gets full access to your profile but either to aggregated data (inlcuding that about you) or a subset of the data you provided that is impossible to trace back to you).

Introduction
Random dude, likes monkeys, code, free culture and software as well as being a smartass. Usually known as "tante".

I work at the University of Oldenburg as a researcher. If you are German you might know me from my work for the "datenschutzkritische Spackeria", if you're not, you probably don't but still, I did make a short-lived podcast (on hiatus now) and I have a blog (see right) which you also might or might not know.

I mostly write about the changes our new digital world brings, the ethics connected to it.
