I'm just reading the #Hyperion Cantos :::
In Dan Simmons book "Hyperion", the foul mouthed poet Martin Silenus talks about his experiences in "The #DataSphere ..." taking part in the so-called "All-Thing"... an intergalactic infrastructure of political debate and decision making.

I'm pretty amazed that Simmons wrote this in 1989! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet#History )
I think Silenus' cynical report totally hits the nerve.
This is pretty much how we engage in political debate on the Internet.
We can all discuss and protest about virtually anything, as much as we want...
In the end there are people in positions of power, who decide about political questions, programs and agendas.
Nevertheless, I still believe that we can create a lot of impact if we manage to provide and establish infrastructures of communication that allow us to make traditional structures of power, influence and intervention obsolete.
As I stated above: It's a matter of shifting from a questionable social culture of delimitation and rivalry towards openness, social responsibility and solidarity.

I work at the University of Oldenburg as a researcher. If you are German you might know me from my work for the "datenschutzkritische Spackeria", if you're not, you probably don't but still, I did make a short-lived podcast (on hiatus now) and I have a blog (see right) which you also might or might not know.
I mostly write about the changes our new digital world brings, the ethics connected to it.
