#TopTipTuesday How to Prevent Work-related Hearing Loss

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational injuries. Manufacturing plant workers, construction workers, airport crews, emergency personnel, plumbers, and miners are among those who are at high risk of developing hearing loss and tinnitus due to the high decibel noise levels found in their work activities.

If you are working in such high decibel industries, you can help your hearing by cutting down the level of the noise that goes in through your ears i.e. ear protection. Yes, it is more convenient and cheaper to drive to the local pharmacy and pick up some disposable foam ear plugs, but there is a better alternative - custom-fit ear plugs (or sometimes referred to as ‘musician plugs’).

Custom-fit ear plugs are:
1. Better in preserving sound quality – Custom-fit ear plugs will lower sound more evenly across frequencies while reducing the sound volume, thus maintaining the natural quality of speech and music.
2. More comfortable – Custom-fit ear plugs are specially moulded and shaped in high quality materials to fit comfortably in your ear canal.
3. Longer lasting – Custom-fit ear plugs are reusable and will generally last between 3 - 5 years depending on their treatment.
4. More effective protection – As custom-fit ear plugs are made from the shape of your ear, a secure fit is ensured, providing more effective protection against noise damage.

Preventing work-related hearing loss is as simple as getting custom-fit ear plugs from your audiologist. Your audiologist can tailor them specifically to you, your occupation, and your preferences.

#TopTipTuesday When you have trouble hearing what someone is saying, don't worry about asking "what?/pardon?/sorry?".

However, if you still can't hear it after the second time, it helps to repeat back to the speaker what you thought you heard. This makes it easy for the speaker to identify which part of the sentence needs emphasis and rephrasing.
