For those of you who will be at +NTEN #13NTC , +Rachel Weidinger and I will be presenting on "Building Movements: Beyond Emails, Campaigns, and Organizations" — we're really excited and hope you can join us, Thursday at 10:30 in Marquette I (visit the link below for the conference link).

TAKEAWAYS:

- Strategizing with other organizations to build interconnected campaigns. Giving up a little message control and gaining a lot of social power. Big listening across your movement with social data.

- Community management at (huge) scale. Technology that fosters movement building -- and technology that stunts it.

- Supporting the bubbling up of stories, and amplifying the passion and compassion of activists. Communications platforms across a movement: In person, on Twitter, over email, in blogs, through webinars and postcards.

Does anyone know how to report spam being sent through Convio to Convio or Blackbaud? I can't find any information on either site to report that one of their clients is spamming (without a mailing address, even).

Great to see, thanks! I hope you'll add this information on the Blackbaud and Convio sites, though -- I was very surprised and disappointed to see no "how to report spam/abuse" link anywhere, unlike the vast majority of other ESPs.

Also, just to clarify, this isn't a matter of me being unsubscribed -- I can do that myself. This is a matter of your client sending unsolicited commercial email, and UCE that violates the CAN-SPAM Act.

Just a warning to watch out for fake domain renewal scams like Domain Registry of America. Nonprofits are at particular risk of being exploited because of low information and public registration data, and I've seen at least two almost make the unintentional switch.

Hey, maybe this'll get me using Google Plus more! Thanks to +Allan Benamer and +Deborah Elizabeth Finn for the invite. I'm a nonprofit consultant doing a lot of work in a) Drupal development and b) communications and advocacy work. I have a background in community organizing. I'm active in both the Drupal community (I'm a DA member and on the docs team) and NTEN (I'm one of the Community of Practice-Drupal facilitators).

Spam is a big issue for companies that offer a platform for others to use and sometimes exploit.
At RallyBound we created a procedure that places emails into a queue. We then monitor each email as it's being set to see if it bounces or is reported as spam etc. We apply an algorithm to see if we should cut off the remaning emails and block future emails.

You don’t need to and shouldn’t register your nonprofit website with Domain Registry of America — don’t be fooled!

Domain Registry of America sends the owner of a website domain an official-looking “expiration notice,” urging the owner to “act today” to prevent “loss of your online identity making it difficult for your customers and friends to locate you.” Yet Domain Registry of America vastly overcharges for domain registration — their entire business model is built on swindling people into switching their registration. Don’t let it happen to you!

Some more writing about Occupy Wall Street (and Occupy Philly, where I've been involved). I highlight some of the constructive criticism surrounding the Occupy encampments, in particular as it relates to anti-racism and racial justice.

  • I play handbells professionally.
  • I am not Russian. Not even a little bit.
I am the creative director of Rootwork.org, a web design and social networking strategy firm focused on nonprofits and social change organizations. This work grew out of my four years with the Genocide Intervention Network, which I helped co-found in 2004.

I co-organize Philadelphia NetSquared, which brings together nonprofits and tech experts for discussions about using social technology for social change.

I have a degree in peace and conflict studies from Swarthmore College, and I am an experienced community organizer. I have training in the field of experiential education, nonviolent social action, social change strategy and anti-oppression work. I am also on the board of the Peace and Justice Studies Association and the American Friends Service Committee's Nobel Peace Prize Committee.
