Inti Raymi, Festival of the Sun in Cusco

The #IntiRaymi “#Festival of the Sun”) was a religious ceremony of the #IncaEmpire in honor of the #GodSun, one of the most venerated gods in Inca religion. According to chronicler Garcilazo de la Vega, Sapa Inca Pachacuti created the Inti Raymi to celebrate the winter solstice and a new year in the Andes of the Southern Hemisphere. During the Inca Empire, the Inti Raymi was the most important of four ceremonies celebrated in Cusco.

The celebration took place in the #Wakaypata or the main plaza in #Cusco city. The ceremony was also said to indicate the mythical origin of the Incas, lasting 9 days of colourful dances and processions, as well as animal sacrifices to ensure a good cropping season. The last Inti Raymi with the Inca Emperor’s presence was carried out in 1535, after which the Spanish conquest and the Catholic Church suppressed it. Some natives participated in similar ceremonies in the years after, but it was completely prohibited in 1572 by the Viceroy Francisco de Toledo, who claimed it was a pagan ceremony opposed to the Catholic faith.

Tour to Moray and Salt Mines of Maras in Half Day

We pick you up at 8:30am or 12:30pm drive in our private transport until the village of #Maras where they still keep a good part of its colonial #architectural beauty. You can see made of thin stone, lintels with sculptures in bas-relief. Then we go to #Salineras where the #saltMine is located consisting of 3,000 small pools roughly 5 square metres (53.8 ft²) in size. Every three days, during the dry season, workers fill the pools with salt water that comes from a natural hot spring at the top of the #MarasComplex. When the water evaporates from the pool, the salt is left for collection. This process is carried out over a one month period until the pools reach an approximate volume of solid salt that is 10 centimetres (4 inches) in height. The salt is ground up, treated with iodine packaged and sent to various markets in the region. It is a short picturesque walk downhill from Salineras taking approximately 40 minutes back to our transport.

Then we go to the #Moray #ruins located at 3,450m, where we find the agricultural terraces of Moray with their complex system of irrigation and terraces. Different levels of terraces are carved into a huge bowl, part of which was further excavated by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates depending on how deep into the bowl they are and they were thought to have been used by the Incas to discover the optimal conditions for their crops. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical #Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning.

South Valley Tour: Tipon, Piquillacta, Andahuaylillas

This tour takes us to the unique and magnificent #archaeological site of #Tipon where we enjoy the impressive irrigation system of the Incas, then to #Piquillacta where we admire the huge urban planning of the #Wari #culture. After that we visit #Andahuaylillas where is located “the #Sixtine #Chapel of #America” with the impressive mural paintings from the XVII century.

TIPON: Tipon is said to be a royal garden commissioned by Wiracocha. It is one of the most elaborate examples of agricultural terracing created by the Incas. These tall terraces which run up the narrow valley are irrigated by an aqueduct from #Pachatusan, the mountain above the site. In addition to the terracing there are also some other structures at Tipon, including baths, a temple complex, canals and aqueducts. Tipon is definitely one of the lesser visited sites in the #Cusco area but it is equally as impressive as those in the #SacredValley. The Tipon Archeological Complex is located 24 km southeast of #Cusco.

PIKILLAQTA: #Pikillacta is the only pre-Inca site in the Cusco area. This adobe complex was built around 700 to 900 years AD by the #Huari Culture, in the area, there is a small Inca site just a short walk from Pikillacta, known as #Rumicolca, a #travel checkpoint for the Incas.

ANDAHUAYLILLAS: Here you find the "Sixtine Chapel of America", a church that is home to golden altars, paintings and many colored ceilings. The chapel is simple and unassuming on the outside, but on the inside you'll find masterpiece after masterpiece. Also some paintings from famous “#EscuelaCuzqueña” can be appreciated.
