Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you.

Some of our staff, including our Principal, David Killen, might best be described as Sci-Fi geeks. David says that he still remembers seeing "Star Wars: A New Hope" at the cinema when it was first released. Well, today is an important day, it's Star Wars Day. It's when we celebrate all things Star Wars. Being lawyers, we're also fascinated by the intersection of the law with our favourite galaxy far, far away...

Lucasfilm has been very protective of its intellectual property over the years. It was George Lucas' understanding of the importance of IP that allowed him keep control of the Star Wars franchise and become one of the richest directors in film history. Here are some little bits of trivia that you may not know:

1. Way back in 1985, President Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defence Inititive became known as "Star Wars". George Lucas was not happy about that and sued for trademark infringement. George was wasn't successful in that instance.

2. The term "droids" is a registered trademark of Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm registered the trademark after Verizon Wireless released a range of Android phones named "DROID".

3. In 2000, rapper Dr Dre wanted to use the “THX Deep Note” in one of his tracks. The "THX Deep Note" is distinctive, sound effect, used as an “audio logo” by THX (who were a division of LucasFilm until 2001). You'd likely recognise it if you heard it. Lucasfilm refused permission for Dr Dre to use it, and then sued him for trademark infringement when he used it anyway.

If you have any questions about intellectual property, then give our Principal, David Killen a call. David has a passion for IP and would love to discuss your requirements.

Finally, if you love Star Wars as much as we do, we'd appreciate it if you liked our page and shared this post. Thanks, and May the 4th be with you.
