If you plan to paint (or have painted) your house this summer be sure to paint the ends of the trim to seal the grain.

IQA Home Inspections, Inc. now offers the following services either standalone or coupled with Home Inspections:

If we don't have it, we'll find someone that does.

I suggest that people check or have checked their crawlspace and attic, but be sure to wear protective gear if you do, including goggles.

With our heating systems or wood stoves working overtime make sure to perform your monthly smoke and carbon monoxide detector check.

Does your garage door start acting up as the weather turns cold? There a few reasons why your garage door may only partially open or close during cold weather events. Check for cold and hardened or gummy grease in the guide rollers and consider the fact that steel contracts in the cold, so if the tolerances are tight or if the guides are twisted or not installed just quite right that could be all it takes. Remember however that there are some dangerous components, such as the torsion/lift-assist careful...or call a professional!

We commonly find deck related issues when performing home inspections. If you home brewed your deck or if you have plans to build a deck be sure to consult a guide such as this one, but also be sure to check with your local jurisdiction and/or a local design professional to be sure that you don't put yourself, your family, and your friends at risk by building a sub-par structure.

With the temperature dropping many home owners will close or block their crawlspace vents. Unless prolonged sub-freezing temperatures are expected or if you have exposed pipes that are not insulated it is recommended that crawlspace vents remain open to allow for proper ventilation of the space.

Radon Gas is becoming a hot topic these days and for good reason. Radon is estimated to cause thousands of lung cancer deaths each year and the EPA suggests that it may be the #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Seven counties in Oregon now require radon mitigation systems as part of new construction; as of this writing we're aware of Baker, Clackamas, Hood River, Multnomah, Polk, Washington, and Yamhill counties. Radon is not tough to test for, but it is important that the process is done right. We'd be happy to help.
