I was reading a novel last night which used some non-said tags. Either they irritated me (bad idea), or I didn't even notice them (so what's the point in spending time thinking up an acceptable alternative to said?).

I agree yelled and mumbled are good substitutes. I'm not sure about stammered - I've read a lot of authors who ...
s-s-show the stammering in the dialogue, which makes it redundant.

I have the same feeling about answered or responded - it's obvious, and if it's obvious, it can probably be cut. But that's editor-me. Reader-me may or may not notice. One of the beauties of self-publishing is that my clients can ignore editor-me if they think that serves the story better.
