Shopping for bonds: a tale of two markets
If you’re the kind of investor that doesn’t buy and sell individual bonds because you prefer to own bond mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), then you can ignore this article and move on.

But if you do buy and sell individual bonds, keep reading. You’re probably paying too much when you buy, and getting short-changed when you sell.

There’s no doubt about it - this is one of the most expensive times of year! From gifts under the tree and a huge meal on the table (not to mention logging some serious miles on the road to visit Grandma), the average Canadian can expect to shell out big bucks to afford the holiday season

Shopping for stocks? How to avoid a dud
“Value investing is faith-based investing,” says George Christison, an investment planner and founder of IFM Planning Services and investingforme.com, based in Lantzville, B.C.

“Value investors tend to believe they have the skill, insight and ability to spot opportunities where most can’t. But I think it takes a special personality to value-invest and achieve consistent success,” Mr. Christison says.
Value traps are stocks that look cheap, but the company is actually in trouble

Canadian investors: cross your fingers!
When it comes to your investments, do you think your advisor and their employer should be required to act in your best interests when they give you advice?

Most of us would answer yes, and in fact believe it’s their job to act in our best interest.

Advisors: Don't fear the robo-advisor

There's no shortage of debate surrounding robo-advisors, but the arguments sound oddly familiar.

The ongoing hype about robo-advisors being a game changer is the same as what was said about discount brokers when they first emerged in the 1980's, or when re-balancing mutual funds became available in the 1990's, or when Exchange traded funds (ETFs) were created in the 2000's. In other words, robo-advisors are just another tool available to Canadian investors. To read more, see my full article at Wealth Professional Magazine.

Wouldn't it be great if investments came with a rating like a ski run?

Just imagine! Then you’d know what you’d be getting yourself into with just a quick glance! You’d know if you’re going to be somewhat comfortable, or on the other hand, way in over your head! Wouldn’t that be handy? So, let’s borrow from the ski resorts and use their rating system to talk about a few preferred share investment opportunities.
